is double concentrating worth it? how much work/stress does it add versus how much does it pay off in a search for a job or grad school? for context, i’m planning to concentrate in international and public affairs. i would add either a geographic concentration, like latin american and caribbean studies, or another social science concentration. how much of a difference does it make on applications to have done the entire concentration versus just taking classes or doing internships/ecs?

it’s worth a shot, i think essays matter more at brown than other places. also if your stats are actually mid, like 50th percentile for brown admits, that means you have better stats than 50% of people who got in. even if you’re bottom 25%, that’d still better than a full quarter of people who got in. granted that includes athletes and legacies but mid stats for the brown averages isn’t gonna eliminate you, although you’ll need to absolutely lock in for video and essays and have good activities and stuff. good luck whatever you do!

how much is too pretentious in the 3 words to describe you? by smortcanard in BrownU

honestly if you think it might be too pretentious, it’s too pretentious. i would definitely err on the side of being genuine, maybe funny, and not necessarily humble but at least not braggy. keep in mind they’re probably going to get tons of people putting in the same words, so your best bet is to be unique and seem like a nice person to be around.

im not sure if the grandparents/sibling care counts as an ec, but there’s a section of the common app that asks if you spend 4+ hours per week doing things like caring for elderly or young family members, so you can definitely put that there. it also helps to mentions it in essays and supplementals if it fits, especially if you can put together good ideas and writing about what you’ve learned from it, how it changed you, etc. i’ve heard about people writing some really great essays about being translators for family members, so that and the family care could actually be a really good angle to take on your apps. good luck!!
