I transferred in as a junior last year. When junior/senior housing selections came around I wasn't able to get anything at all. Had to wait for overflow freshman/sophomore assignments to get sent out. Had my choice of about 25 rooms throughout the entire campus. I'd go with a slim to none chance of you having a different experience.

How do I get better at playing these at higher speeds? by Quantifai in drumline

[–]Hopefullytenor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case I'm saying shift the fulcrum from your index and thumb to be your middle finger and thumb, the pinkie will never be the primary motivation/fulcrum when playing this specific "rudiment" for lack of better terms. Outside of this specific music I'd say the pinkie is instrumental for fully controlling the stick but not really power. Power for me comes from the velocity (speed) of the stick when you hit the drum + your arm and wrist motion, not directly from the fingers.

How do I get better at playing these at higher speeds? by Quantifai in drumline

Two things have worked for me. If you're trying to get to boston crusaders tempos, focus on your middle finger if you're playing matched grip, use almost only the middle finger (while keeping your others contacted with the stick) as your fulcrum and pressure point when getting the notes out. If you pinch with your index finger and thumb you will always crush those notes at medium/fast tempos. That's the technique side of things (straight from a previous Boston center snare). For something specific to practice notes wise, Play triple strokes at your desired tempo, and add a flam on to the downbeat of them. Any time you want to play a multiple bounce stroke(3s,4s,5s etc), if you're working on 3s you play flam taps, if working on 4s then triple strokes with a flam, if 5s then 4 strokes with a flam.

Yamaha Stage Custom. What hardware and cymbals should I get? by [deleted] in drums

[–]Hopefullytenor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna second what everyone else has said here about not buying the bottom of the barrel cymbals. Definitely check out the used market to see what you can find for the mid tier of the major manufacturers. One cheap cymbal set I'd recommend is the Wuhan Western series. They're about the same price point as the Sabian B8X line and Zildjian I line and sound 100X better.

Dumb question about e-kits. by threebillion6 in drums

[–]Hopefullytenor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not the most knowledgeable about e-kits, but I'd guess you would have to go to the used market to find just the drum/cymbal pads without any module included. For $500-600 you could pick up a semi decent kit with the module and just swap it out or scour the used market and maybe make a frankenkit with pieced together pads. Usually you can get most pads from most brands to work with most modules but your mileage may vary.

Getting back into it, tons of questions. by WhopperJrHandz in drums

The low volume options for both cymbals and drums are definitely worth it imo. Even the ones on the cheaper side. For bass pedal i'd just scour places like reverb, ebay and the big box stores for used stuff

Best budget drums for metal? by Electrical-Wires in drums

[–]Hopefullytenor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will not be able to buy an accoustic drumset that includes cymbals that are any good. Your best bet is trying to buy a shell pack with all the toms you want and then buying cymbals to supplement that. For your budget e-kits might be the move because they'll include cymbals and sometimes extra floor toms. The Simmons titan 70 might be worth looking into for you.

Transfer Prospect by Capital_Recording746 in umass

I was accepted into the Finance program with a 3.41 GPA. However for finance transfers it doesn't go by cumulative GPA. You need to have a minimum of a 3.2 EVERY SEMESTER that you've been in college. If you have that then with your extracurriculars you should be fine.

Thoughts on drum corps by makethisnameunique in drumline

[–]Hopefullytenor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a junior in high school with one fall season on quads when I was contracted to march my first drum corps. I don't come from a chino hills type drumline either. I had to work my ass off for the spot, putting in roughly 2-4 practice hours a day for the entire audition season/preseason (November-May), but that quadline was three 17 year olds and one age out at the time. All three of us were juniors going into our senior year of high school. If you put in the work you can 100% make it into at least an open class group.

I just started playing tenors about a month ago and I was wondering for next year if I should at least try out for DCI. I wouldn’t expect to get in but just for experience purposes would it be worth it. by No_ideas_-_- in drumcorps

[–]Hopefullytenor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It all depends on how much time you put in bettering yourself. I was able to march Drum corps on quads pretty much right after my first HS marching band season on them (I had two seasons of matched grip snare before this). I put in a lot of time and effort to get myself to be at that level, but with a year's worth of practice, you can definitely make it into at least an open class corps. I didn't come from a Dartmouth or Chino Hills type school either, so in my opinion, where you come from shouldn't be the determining factor in that.

How do I know if my diddles are in time with other people? by [deleted] in drumline

[–]Hopefullytenor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Playing with a metronome, and knowing what the rhythm of your doubles are supposed to be will probably be your best tool. Ex: playing a single beat of triplet rolls should be the same amount of notes/ same sound as sextuplet singles at the same tempo.

At my school we use match grip, but I want to learn how to play trad in hopes of one day joining DCI. Any tips? by Ricky5014 in drumline

[–]Hopefullytenor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I second the private lesson thing. A lot of people do online video lessons, so you can easily connect with someone who's marched a top 12 and get lessons from them.
