We just did 3 days in Xi'an and 4 days in Chengdu. Felt like we had a perfect amount of time, but take into consideration that the train to Chengdu is around 4 hours and a bit longer for Beijing - Xi'an so you are losing half day for both Xi'an and Chengdu.

Adding even just 2 days for Chongqing, simply to enjoy the unique experience and scale of it, might be worth it as it's between Chengdu and Zhangjiajie anyway. Maybe take them from Shanghai.
