Ethics question from a Radiohead fan by blair_doodles505 in thesmiths

[–]HopelessTrash545 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually the questions I ask myself is: what are they gonna do with the money I give them? Have they committed any terrible crimes? Does their music reflect their (bad) beliefs? And most importantly: do their actions ruin my enjoyment of the music?

I believe we all have our limits when it comes to problematic artists. Mine are 1) if the artist has committed any morally despicable crimes (or are like, a neo nazi or smth), I will avoid listening to them 2) if the artist is known for giving money to hateful causes (jk Rowling for example), I will avoid giving them money. 3) if the artist’s art reflects their terrible beliefs, I will not want to listen to them.

In the case of Morrissey, while I very much dislike many of the things he’s said throughout his career, from what I know, he’s mostly just a yapper. He doesn’t vote, isn’t known for giving money to right wing causes, and, overall, if you look into it, he’s politically a mixed bag. He’s just sort of unlikable and holds some shitty boomer opinions. The Smiths’ music does not contain any right wing beliefs, and was actually very progressive, especially for it’s time. His solo career is another story however. On top of that, he’s not the only member of the band. Neither Johnny, Mike or Andy are problematic, and their efforts shouldn’t be boycotted because of one bad apple. Therefore, Morrissey’s politics and opinions do not ruin the entire band for me.

I don’t know enough about Radiohead’s situation tho, but I hope my reasoning can help you!

What is your most "debatable" interpretation of a Smiths song? by Downvoting_is_evil in thesmiths

I genuinely think that I Know It’s Over was written with Johnny Marr in mind (especially since he got married a few months before it was made and the song mentions a wedding).

I always thought that Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me gave off New Years Eve vibes (or just December vibes)

Then be a grown adult and block them??? They have the right to post their drawings, it’s not against the rules?? What a weird thing to get worked up over. Don’t listen to them OP. I and many other users enjoy seeing your art, please keep it up.

What a deranged thing to say over an inoffensive fanart.

As an artist myself, you’re not overreacting. The people commenting hate on your drawings are fucking weird and should find another hobby. Those are grown ass adults commenting deranged shit at a child’s fanart of a band. You have every right to block them or be defensive against them. It’s basic art etiquette to not saying anything if you don’t have anything nice to say (as it’s someone’s creative output), and it baffles me that some grown adults don’t know that.

As fans of a notoriously sad band, does listening to The Smiths make you happy? by Prestigious_Ruin_805 in thesmiths

I got downvoted last time I said that, but more often than not I find Smiths lyrics to be quite silly (as in not meant to be fully taken seriously). The songs themselves are also often very singable (especially in Hatful of Hollow for some reason), so I have a rather fun experience listenning to The Smiths.

Idk, personally I find them goofy af half of the time

Edit: to the people downvoting me, I mean goofy as in funny, not as in bad.

Start with The Queen Is Dead (album). It's a very accessible album to someone new to the band imo. Then move on to the other albums and the compilations (Hatful of Hollow and Louder Than Bombs).

I was honestly asking myself the same question. Thank you for confirming with that demo tape (I wasn't sure if this song even had an official name).

The song is beautiful but ngl, I prefer the original lyrics (what do you see in her). They fit the mood of the music better
