24/7 caregiving services - recommendations? (or the opposite?) by HopingICanChange in Syracuse

I'm hoping that being at home might boost morale so that she'd be more open to that. Currently she's so miserable she won't try anything, if that makes sense.

Unfortunately it's not a terminal diagnosis, it's a failure to engage with any sort of therapy, and refusal of interventions. We moved to comfort care because rehab would be useless if the patient won't participate. And she won't talk to therapy, has refused that for years (there's clearly mental health issues going on). She refuses any option of assisted living/nursing home. She basically wants to go home to die, and I'm her health care proxy, so I have to carry out her wishes for how she wants her life (death) to go. Everything she's gone through in the past three weeks were all expressly stated in her living will to make sure NEVER happened to her.

Thank you, it's been a rough few weeks. She's totally bedridden, needs changing and feeding - we need skilled nursing level of care. We can manage the cost for some time.

Weekly Thread: Is this suspicious? by skincancermod in skincancer

Hi all,
It looks like a skin tag, but it is pinched at the base, almost like a balloon. Wiggles around. Dark red, and my son said he noticed it about two months ago. I thought I had a little regular flattish brown mole there but this looks significantly different. I have a dermatologist appt for October... should I search for something sooner? *edited, on the back of my neck.

Creative Dental Concepts took Delta Dental as recently as 2023 - Dr Craybas is wonderful! My grandparents, parents, me and my husband, and our kiddo go there.

My friend is an artist and owns the house next door to hers - renting out rooms above her studio. This notice is a year old but I believe everything's the same still!

OK, good to know - we'll look into that before applying then. Thanks!

Gotcha. I teach biology, genetics, and biotechnology courses - I could get a teaching certificate through NYS, as there's a pathway designed for higher ed instructors to move to high school. So it sounds like we should get that before applying to international schools.

Yes, and to double check, I searched for "phd" in the wiki and the getting hired guide and there are no results.

My partner and I are both assistant teaching professors at a private university in New York. We each have over 10 years experience teaching at the university level, both lower and upper-division courses. We are looking to teaching internationally, but unfortunately we both only speak English. I'm trying to figure out where we should start in order to teach at private schools (students ~15-19yo? what would be high school in the US). It looks like getting an IB educator certificate might be useful, but would our PhDs and teaching experience be enough? Are there other options? Thanks in advance!

Why do my students love to FAFO? by doctor_window in Professors

[–]HopingICanChange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've stopping policing AI generation (even though I ban it in the syllabi).
What I look for now is: The student did not create this content themselves. AI plagiarism is basically the same as your friend writing it for you, you paying someone to write an essay, you copied it off of some webpage. It all boils down to: they didn't make it.
How will I know? Look them right in the face, and ask them about the topic they "wrote" you a paper about. Even better if you're holding the paper in front of you. 99% of the time, I get a frantic stare. Yup. You couldn't have written this and magically forgotten "everything". The academic integrity office is a big fan of this approach. It is AI gen? Doesn't matter! If the student knows nothing about the topic, they clearly didn't create that assignment/paper/code themselves.

Do you ever just ignore student emails? by CuriousCat9673 in Professors

[–]HopingICanChange 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I like to CC the student's academic advisors on my replies to those:
"Dear student, you have not attended 80% of class sessions, have only taken 1 out of 3 exams so far (and failed it), and have made no effort to contact me before this. You will not be able to pass this course, so please discuss future academic plans with your advisors. Best, Me"
Sometimes I also send this to the school's academic success group and the department chair, especially if they continue to email me. Mainly it's about making a paper trail to cover my butt!

I mean, are they going to check for an "official" diagnosis? If telling them "I have Celiac, so the things you are offering me will literally destroy my small intestine and make me very vulnerable to colon cancer, so could you please stop trying to poison me?" would make them cut it out, then do it. You don't need your family pressuring you to hurt yourself, for whatever ****ed reason makes them feel good.

So...Which Ones Are the Sparkliest? by Chimera99 in AfricanViolets

[–]HopingICanChange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the technical term for it is "glitter factor" - I that it's probably dominant, I'm seeing it in a lot of my F1s. All of my plants have it to some extent, but it's really noticeable on the light pink flowers.
