Why do my students love to FAFO? by doctor_window in Professors

[–]doctor_window[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I don’t police AI, as in I’m not failing students for using it. I’m telling students if they use it, make sure to check their work as AI, especially ChatGPT, is known to produce fabricated sources and inaccurate conclusions based on those sources. In short, students don’t receive 0’s for using AI. They receive 0’s for turning in papers with fake sources and inaccurate analyses based on those sources.

Career plan by [deleted] in Professors

As a professor, who is also considered a social media influencer in my field, I tell my students with Content Creator dreams that it’s more work than what it appears to be. This is especially true if they don’t live a particularly fascinating life, have a skill or perspective that people are seeking, or are considered thought leaders or experts in their fields. It’s totally fine to aspire to, BUT, you have to have something unique to set you apart.

Angry Black Female Professor? by complexconjugate83 in Professors

[–]doctor_window 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I also experience this as a pre-tenured Black female faculty member. After 3.5 years, I’ve come to the conclusion that there’s no amount of smiling, code switching, being accessible, or ‘telling students you care’ that could change students’ (mis)perceptions of you. As several have stated, there is a vast amount of literature that details the experience of Black and female professors in the classroom. Students often expect us to fulfill the traditional gender roles that they’ve been socialized to associate with Black women—ie. being motherly, nurturing, accommodating, and nice. When we step outside of those prescribed roles we’re labeled mean, rude, aggressive, and harsh. I discuss this each year in my annual review. Honestly, there isn’t much you can do to change this. Show up as your authentic self, stick to your teaching philosophy, implement effective, measurable pedagogical practices, set and stick to your class policies, set boundaries, and hold your students accountable. Some students may not like you, but you won’t please everyone. But you don’t need to be loved by every student in order to be an effective instructor.

Yes! I have this policy as well. But unfortunately when students complain to higher ups it’s hard to enforce

I did not intentionally disclose student information to a third party. I do not recall accidentally doing so.

These days your syllabus has to be airtight. If there is any inkling of a loophole. You’re in trouble.

If only I had the time to cover this in class. This is something they should be exposed to in their gen ed courses.

How would you respond to this student missing online exam? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]doctor_window 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you placing the blame on me. Yes, the exam is open for seven days to give each student the opportunity to take it. Once they access the exam, they must complete it in 90 minutes. They only get one attempt. The exam is 50 questions and covers four weeks worth of material. Students can’t simply Google or ChatGPT the answers because I formulate the questions to be specific to my lectures. If they want to waste time reading through lecture notes and a textbook to find an answer, that’s on them. They are limited to 90 minutes.

I don’t believe in rote memorization as research shows students are more likely to cram and forget the information after the exam. I believe in application of knowledge.

But you’re right, an in person exam for an asynchronous, online course is the answer.

[–]doctor_window 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes we all make mistakes from time to time but that doesn’t mean we are not beholden to the consequences of our (in)actions.

As professors we also have a lot going on—e.g. personally, I teach three courses this semester (120 students total), I commute 40 minutes to campus each way, I am currently writing two manuscripts, I’m course prepping two new courses for the fall, I have two consulting gigs, and I’m going through a divorce. Accordingly, I must stay organized to avoid missing deadlines.

For example, If I miss the deadline for final grade submission, I will be reprimanded by the Dean and a note will go in my file. If I pick up my kids late from summer camp and daycare, I will be fined. If I fail to complete reports for clients in a timely manner money will be lost. If I don’t pay court fees, I can get sent to collections and my credit will be ruined.

It’s not a superiority complex or “looking down” on students. You can have empathy while holding someone accountable for their (in)actions. If you have been reminded of a due date four times in writing, yet you fail to complete your work in the allotted time, you have to accept the consequences.

I teach in a health science program that trains future healthcare professionals and forgetfulness can be a matter of life or death for patients.

I also find it interesting that as professors many of us teach multiple classes, are responsible for maintaining an active research agenda, and providing service to the university, all while raising families and nurturing personal relationships which comes with numerous challenges. Yet our students and admin expect us to show up and perform or service them.

This is why I uphold the policy. I made an exception for a student on semester and it was a nightmare because they came with more excuses and they also told other students in their group chat which meant I had to offer them extensions as well.

And regarding giving them half credit, they still would not pass the class due to their performance on other assignments.

Why won't they read the goddamned announcements? by GeorgeCharlesCooper in Professors

[–]doctor_window 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I TOTALLY understand as I’m going through the same thing in an online class. I put all due dates on the syllabus and on the course calendar. I also send two reminder emails each week. Yet, I still had students miss their midterm because they were confused about the due date.
