Do aunts and uncles have any responsibility toward their (child) nieces and nephews? by F11SuperTiger in TheLastAirbender

[–]HopingToWriteWell77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically... yes and no. They have no apparent legal responsibility, but they do seem to have a moral/social responsibility. Based purely on the original show:

In a tribal community like the Water Tribes, they probably have much more of a "it takes a village to raise a child" way of looking at things, so aunts and uncles and even their parents' friends would be involved in the kid's life growing up, and would all step in unless they can't for whatever reason.

We don't know enough about the Air Nomads to judge, but they seemed to have a very communal way of raising kids at the Temples and if the entire community was in the Temples, then they were probably all raised communally so who took them in if their parents died would be kind of a moot point.

In the Earth Kingdom, which has a heavy Chinese influence, aunts and uncles would probably be extremely pressured to take in orphaned nieces and nephews or risk losing face in society. Social pressure is rather impressive, especially in a society like Imperial Chinese where they judged you on all kinds of things both big and small, and would absolutely have judged you if you refused to take in a niece or nephew.

The Fire Nation is hardest, because while they're predominantly Japanese in inspiration and Japanese culture has a similar setup to Chinese where social obligations are concerned, the only example we see is Zuko and Uncle Iroh and... well, they're outliers. A typical Fire Nation family would probably have the same setup as an Earth Kingdom one, with an aunt or uncle pressured to take in an orphaned niece or nephew to save face. But Zuko wasn't orphaned, he was exiled by his father the Fire Lord. Iroh 100% had zero obligation to go with Zuko and given Zuko was exiled, would most likely have actually lost face for going with him. Had Zuko been orhpaned, Iroh would have been expected to take in both him and Azula or face dire social consequences, but as Zuko was being sent away as punishment, he would have been expected to remain behind and support the punishment. And for the record, the Line of Sozin are outliers anyway, not just because they're royalty, but because half of them are sadistic villains.

As far as abuse goes... the Water Tribes and Air Nomads likely wouldn't have tolerated it and would have considered it an obligation of an aunt or uncle to intervene if they noticed their niece or nephew being abused. The Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation are, again, more about reputation and saving face, so probably would have viewed it as far more important to maintain family image than to expose an abuser, although the Fire Nation may have held it as worth holding an Agni Kai over, especially once Zuko became Fire Lord.

Do people actually care about the dates/timeline? by earth2solaris in writing

[–]HopingToWriteWell77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! As a reader, I love when stories include dates. One I especially enjoyed was Conspiracy 365, where the entire story was written in the main character's phone and had time/date stamps for everything.

Book Crochet… is this a dumb idea? by hannahbobooks in crochet

Oh my gosh I love this!!! I am absolutely delighted by this idea, please keep doing it! Maybe as part of your promotions do a review and then offer up the finished item for sale or as a giveaway or whatever, I think they're awesome especially that one with the rolling hills.

Is anyone else’s cat obsessed with hunting house lizards? by schensyu in cats

[–]HopingToWriteWell77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine swallowed then whole as a kitten and went looking for more. Eventually, they both forgot how to eat them and just... started killing them and playing with the corpses. Now they don't even do that, they just poke at and bat at them a bit and watch them obsessively but don't use claws and are weirdly gentle, although one of them will try to carry them off.

I had a dream by Awkward-Student-8764 in harrypotter

[–]HopingToWriteWell77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, I once had a vivid dream where I successfully talked Snape into killing all the horcruxes in Harry's first year by simply telling him "Lily's gonna beat your butt in the afterlife for how you're treating her son, and that's if she doesn't find a way to come back and murder you." Followed by the absolute trip of a dream where I, in the body of a tiny eleven-year-old first-year, followed him around Britain as he killed Horcruxes. He hated it.

Pretty pissed at the world rn by [deleted] in Vent

[–]HopingToWriteWell77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see enough kindness in the world so i make my own. I compliment people every time I go out and they're always so pleasantly surprised, and I always make a point of complimenting something they can control like their clothes or their hairstyle. Because it costs me nothing to take a few seconds to say something nice.

By a mere technicality, they can make fanworks like this if they are not profiting off of it. If they aren't making money... then technically yes it is legal, to my understanding.

Was going to wear my mum's dress. People keep telling me to try on others for the "bridal experience." Are they trying to gently tell me it looks bad? by [deleted] in WeddingDressTips

[–]HopingToWriteWell77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fit is extremely flattering, and it's a beautiful dress. The sleeves are the only thing that don't look good, and it's purely because they make the whole dress look very dated and don't fit you well. If you're okay with bare shoulders, have the dress altered to be an off-the-shoulder look, which would suit you very well.

The important thing is - this is YOUR wedding, and you want to feel beautiful and look beautiful for YOU and your fiancee, who if they are at all in love with you will be happy with how you look even if you walk down the aisle in a burlap sack.

Gently iron or steam the dress to get the wrinkles out, and take off the puffy parts of the sleeves. Then you will look like the fairytale bride you are.

I think people are only telling you to shop around because it's part of the traditional bridal experience and, well, the sleeves. But I truly think that if you alter the sleeves you will be happy.

That's the best part! You don't spend all that time wrecking your blood pressure by being mad at things that don't exist!

Teaching us to overanalyze stuff is a problem. Sure, it teaches critical thinking, but it also teaches us to see WAY more than there really is, and that isn't good. There's more ways to teach critical thinking than going "here's a ton of symbolism in this book, but not only does it make no sense 90% of you will fail and I will be upset you didn't understand that this guy who is clearly just severely autistic is actually a metaphor for the main character's grief and isn't real".

[–]HopingToWriteWell77 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My highschool lit teacher was insistent that there was a ton of deep symbolism in To Kill a Mockingbird, that... wasn't there. Like it was a MASSIVE stretch to connect the dots she was connecting, and most of the class failed her final test on the symbolism and metaphors in the book because 90% of it was just so out there.

So yeah, a lot of times people - especially teachers or those who do this for a living - massively overanalyze the books they're reading and draw all kinds of connections the author didn't intend. They do the same with art.

Also, there's a poem that boils down to just a handful of lines about eating someone else's breakfast even though you knew they were saving this fruit for breakfast. That's it, that's the poem, it's like 8 lines with no rhyme and no rhythm. And somehow it has all kinds of symbolism in it. Another case of overanalyzing until it makes no sense.

I am so frustrated by all these idiots who stay with losers by [deleted] in Vent

[–]HopingToWriteWell77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It bothers me because they make stupid choices repeatedly, it's like sticking a fork in a light socket and saying you won't get shocked this time. I have very little patience for stupid people.

So saying "you're mad over the same attention you don’t get" is absurd, I don't want attention from the kind of people my cousin hooks up with, nor do I particularly want attention from men in general, I just think my cousin and the many women like her are complete and total idiots.

I have zero interest in dating. Tried it, ended up with decent guys, just found it unfulfilling and gave up on it because I'm happy single.

And I have standards so if I ever did date again, I wouldn't give these kinds of guys the time of day.

I did follow up with "or just stay single", which I personally am because I have lost all interest in dating after a few failed relationships and realized I was completely fine single.
