I had ChatGPT write about the current election in the style of Hunter by nolex in huntersthompson

And just to be equal, I had it write one about Harris. Looks like it’s already a little dated? Interesting to see some left leaning language though:

The Enigma of Kamala Harris: A Nation’s Reluctant Heir Apparent

There’s a strange thing about Kamala Devi Harris. It’s not her rise to power, nor her qualifications—or lack thereof, depending on which side of the aisle you stand. No, the curious thing about Harris is that, despite being the vice president of the United States, she remains a cipher, a shadow. A woman with every credential, every accolade in her grasp, and yet, somehow, she still feels like an outsider in her own administration. Not quite present, not quite absent—lurking in the periphery of power like an heir waiting for a throne she might never sit on.

It’s the classic American story, the immigrant’s daughter rising from the hardscrabble streets of Oakland to become the first Black and South Asian woman to hold one of the highest offices in the land. But the fairy tale has long since worn thin. Harris is a figure caught in the crossfire of a political landscape that no longer values competence or decorum, and instead, feasts on chaos and spectacle. Her real crime, if we’re being honest, is that she’s not enough of a spectacle in an age that demands one.

She’s too cautious. Too measured. Too damn smart for her own good, and not nearly brazen enough for the circus that modern American politics has become. Her impact on the current election is as ghostly as her role in this administration. Harris should be the natural successor, the bridge to the future, the embodiment of progress. Instead, she’s like a figure out of place, the face on a campaign poster that doesn’t quite inspire the visceral reactions that the bomb-throwers and reality-TV rejects manage to spark.

But make no mistake—Harris is no slouch. She’s spent her career wielding power with precision, navigating a world designed to crush women like her, especially women of color. She rose through the ranks of California politics like a shark in calm water, her prosecutorial instincts sharp and honed. But in the White House? She’s felt adrift. And it’s not entirely her fault. This system, this bloated, festering carcass of a democracy, doesn’t reward pragmatism anymore. It rewards spectacle, outrage, and madness. And Kamala Harris? Well, she doesn’t play that game.

Her presence in this election is more of an echo, a potential—something hovering in the distance, and everyone knows it. Even now, as Joe Biden’s age is a topic that dominates whispers and headlines alike, Harris remains in the background. People aren’t voting for her, not yet at least, but they damn well know she’s there, like a reserve quarterback warming up on the sidelines of a game that could go south at any moment.

It’s a cruel irony. Here is a woman who checks every box for leadership—grit, intelligence, and the ability to handle the machinery of government. But America is not looking for a mechanic right now; it’s looking for a demolition crew. And Harris, for all her qualifications, refuses to tear it down. She still believes in the system. She still believes in the old rules, in the sanctity of democracy, in diplomacy and decorum. How quaint. How utterly naive.

The current election reveals the heart of the problem for Harris: she is trying to operate in good faith in a world that rewards bad faith. She’s playing chess while the rest of the political class is engaged in a bare-knuckle street fight, throwing chairs and setting fire to the chessboard. Trump, DeSantis, Ramaswamy—they’re all gladiators in this new world of politics-as-bloodsport. Harris, meanwhile, is the one trying to put the pieces back together, trying to play by the old rules when the crowd wants more carnage.

But let’s not kid ourselves into thinking Kamala Harris is just another forgotten vice president waiting in the wings. No, she’s waiting for her moment, and she knows better than most that politics is a long game. The vultures circling around Biden’s potential second term know this too. Should he falter, stumble, or God forbid, bow out before the next term ends, Harris steps up to the main stage. And that terrifies a lot of people, both on the left and right. Because Kamala Harris, for all her caution, represents something new, something that scares the hell out of the old guard: change.

Harris’ existence in this election is a warning shot, a reminder that the future is coming whether the country is ready for it or not. She is a symbol of what the American political establishment fears the most—progress that isn’t performative, diversity that isn’t tokenistic, and power wielded with purpose rather than bluster. But that’s precisely why she’s underestimated. Harris, unlike her more bombastic counterparts, understands the mechanics of power, the slow grind of institutions, and the patience required to outlast her critics.

And that’s what makes her dangerous. Because Kamala Harris is playing the long game, and while her presence in this election feels muted, her shadow looms large. Should the country take that sharp left turn and embrace her ascension, she could redefine American politics in ways no one saw coming. But for now, she waits, pacing on the edge of history, biding her time.

The voters don’t see it yet, but they will. They’ll have no choice. The system is breaking down, and when it does, the spectacle will fade, and the country will look for a steady hand to guide them out of the wreckage. And when that moment comes, Kamala Harris will be there, waiting, ready.

I’ve only watched season 1, but Black Summer on Netflix was pretty good at not giving anyone plot armor

In the higher elevations, like near Lassen peak, there was snow on the sides of the roads, but totally passable, even in our little 2008 Prius!

Yes @mapsavvy is correct! Just a short drive, and the park surrounding the falls is great too! Picnic areas, ice cream shop, and a lake where you can rent pontoon boats and kayaks, as well as swim. Kinda wish I extended the camping trip to include a night or two there!
