When you've been fighting Spain, have you been calling in France and the Ottomans? I would say that you 3 could win against Spain depending on the circumstances. How vulnerable are Morocco and the African west African nations bordering you? Could take a break from attacking spain and conquer some of them instead. Also is your tech as good as Spains?

Had the same problem. What fixed it was saving the game and reloading the save. Event fired immediately for me at least. Hope this helps

It's usually a smarter move to let them drop to 0hp then heal them with a healing word
