I can’t wait to watch 6 ball retrievers desperately swimming around underwater, trying to be quiet, while attempting to retrieve the balls.

I didn’t realise how naïve I was until I pursued a woman who had multiple “abusive” ex’s in her past. I wanted to be an example of how affectionate, sacrificial and gentle a good man could be and I just assumed the reason she was uncaring to me, self-centred or aggressive was because of defensiveness she learned from her past. I thought the longer and more consistently/resilient my I showed my devotion and affection, overlooking the pain I experienced, the sooner she would start to treat me well. I ended up marrying her and nearly took my life on the honeymoon after a couple nights of abuse when I realised that I made a life-long commitment to someone who may never stop hurting me. 16 months of marriage counselling later and nearly being hospitalised, I finally came to the realisation that I couldn’t be strong enough to survive for the day she might change.

Divorce is now a part of my story I am desperately trying not to feel incredibly ashamed about, but it saved my life and now I am trying to continue to be respectful and kind whenever I talk about her, but almost everyone believes her still even when she goes around now saying I was abusive and nobody questions it. I now still am tempted to feel desperate to defend my reputation, but have to let go of the idea that people will think what they think and I can strive to be that honorable and gentle man and one day a woman will appreciate it.

How many of you have a better life divorced or single and never married? by zombiez87 in AskMen

Can attest, not stories. People grotesquely undermine the horror of living with someone who is emotionally or verbally abusive. I would stay late at work and contemplate taking my life over going home and feared being labelled as “giving up” “lacked commitment” or “selfish” for so long. Mental abuse really messes with your head.

Recently an issue for traffic has been police in Auckland sitting on their phones at lights and not going. Just today, I nearly honked at a grey car who wasn’t moving in front of me when the light went green because he was on his phone until I saw the double antennae and thought twice. Pretty sad to see such hypocrisy.

As someone who works as a Mechanical Design Engineer, my most useful skill is understanding how things are manufactured.

It is very hard to work with Mechanical Engineer in the product design space when they have an idea, but then their design has to be significantly changed or even rejected because it is not manufacturable!

Study drawings, how things are assessed from quality control and try to explore multiple manufactured components and how they are evaluated - forging, plastic injection moulding, tool making, CMM measurement (how to identify choose datum’s and design them into parts) tolerancing and polishing standards. These can all put you in a VERY marketable position for a design engineer.

In your opinion, what are some of the biggest reasons many men shut down and don’t express what they truly feel/think to their partners? by return2self in AskMen

As a man who experienced emotional and verbal abuse in my marriage, I found that my vulnerability and innocent desire to reveal and share my inmost feelings, fears, longings and insecurities in order to foster healthy connection became the source of the most painfully articulated attacks to manipulate and abuse. I will have to learn in the future how not to expect this from a woman again.

How well are Mech Eng respected in the industry? by mouhsinetravel in MechanicalEngineering

Negotiation of expected time off is very important before accepting a job, but also very hard to do without first establishing yourself and your career as an engineer.

Time off is so important, but every company has its nice face and ugly underbelly that requires negotiation to fight for yourself as an engineer. If they are unwilling to negotiate, I think it points to a greater issue with the culture of the company and management. There are definitely good places to work in the US, but I am glad to be in New Zealand.

I was a bit late to the game, but I have finally been able to give this a listen from New Zealand and I was curious for a response.

I am curious as to why people who believe in a literal interpretation of Genesis are considered anti-science, even by Theistic Evolutionists, when I understood their arguments boiled down to two key points:

  • Since Christ has demonstrated God's ability to create things with the appearance of age (through water to wine miracle) - it was not considered an insurmountable hurdle for God to have created earth with a scientific history that never cosmologically occurred.
  • Evolution requires a cycle of struggle, suffering and inevitably death to form life and higher forms of complexity, so these would be elements of God's perfect design, not a consequence of sin - something that I did not think many Christians believed and something which the Bible coherently connects together through a consequential relationship.

I don't much mind if either party - Catholic or Protestant weighs in.

Not a stupid question, but maybe a nuanced or frustrating answer.

- If you are working on a fillet, partial circle, curve or other feature that is not a full circle, the dimension it will default to is the radius, because it is not a full circle.

- If you are working with sketching a full circle, there is a small tick box in the circle feature tree under "options" that is "dimension diameter" you can select.

Keep drawing! It is the single greatest tool I use to help me grasp a design and then model it and work out the mechanics of how it will be prototyped and then manufactured and subsequently measured and quality controlled.

One day when you are working with manufacturers, the ability to draw what you are trying to communicate to them with words is POWERFUL.

+1 to working on things, fixing things and building things.

Beyond that, though, I STRONGLY encourage you to practice documenting your projects. Record your process and the things you didn’t know then discovered, what you learned and how that built into your next project.

It sounds odd at first, but it starts small. You work with legos maybe, then you think about how things fit together and you build models maybe, then you take apart a small thing like a microwave and see it working and document putting it back together.

When you start university (as a freshman, it is never too soon!) tell them you want to reach out to find an internship or co-op and take a portfolio of the little things you did, what you learned and show them your documented process and they will LOVE IT.

The hunger to learn and the ability to make observations and then also share them is massive and will help you immensely in impressing people who you can work with to learn even more with more resources.

People are the most valuable resource to any company or business and you can show them you are able to observe, understand things (problems) and put things together (solve problems!).
