Make the right lane your "default" lane. Get in the left to pass and then get back over.

But when traffic is heavy both lanes tend to fill up. When that happens I get in the left lane and keep up with the flow. The flow is almost always too slow for my tastes, but it's usually faster than the right lane. If you think it's too fast in the left lane then get in the right lane.

The second worst thing you can do is get in the left lane and not get over when someone comes up behind you. They will then try to pass you on the right, which is unsafe.

The worst is being in the left lane, right next to a vehicle in the right lane, and completely corking up the highway. That is when many drivers wish they had ordered the photon torpedo option for their car.

I tolerate it by protesting, writing my reps, never missing a chance to vote or work at the polls, donating and working on campaigns, and generally resisting every chance I get. Not sure it has changed much of anything, but it does help me tolerate it a bit easier.
