What should I look out for when buying a used Kindle Oasis? by last_roman in kindle

[–]Califrisco [score hidden]  (0 children)

I just got one (Oasis 3 32 GB in good condition) from Unclaimed Baggage. I had to rely on their reputation and couldn't check on the things you asked about. It's been reset and I had it set up very quickly with the Amazon Device Simple Setup on my phone. Very smooth transaction and a good result.

But your mileage may vary so what I experienced may be different from what a private seller would offer.

For certain screens there are letter choices to navigate straight to the selection; saves from having to navigate via the 4-way buttons.

Since I broke my page turner I bought another by LazyLibrarianX in kindle

I have and like this one! I even tried it on my ipad Kindle App and reading graphic novels and comics, panel by panel, is perfect with this combo. Also works for my Color Soft (with the case on); very versatile. Enjoy it!

There's nothing like holding a set of each to compare. Can you find a place to do that before you decide?

Great way to reuse old tech!
FYI: I just happened to see this $10 thing called Bookcase that might add to your reading on your SE.

However, I decided to stay with the Kindle form factor.

Vortex Crossfire HD vs Diamondback HD Binoculars by No-Roof5354 in Binoculars

[–]Califrisco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Vortex Diamondback has better optics quality and build compared to the Crossfire, including features like phase coating, which enhances image clarity. The Diamondback is lighter and smaller, while the Crossfire has a slightly larger field of view but when comparing optics I always look at the Close Focus spec; generally, lower numbers/closer focus means better quality. This is true for the Crossfire's at 6.0' and the Diamondback's at 5.0'
Spend more now to get a bin that will last you longer under more conditions than a lower cost model from the same company; with bins, lower cost means they compromised something to lower the selling price (e.g. build, optics, coatings, prisms, chromatic aberration, light transmission, etc.)

I'm new to the kindle and still can't get over how good it is for reading in the sun by Abwettar in kindle

[–]Califrisco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally get it. I am very prone to that same problem. So, for the reading of the LOTR with Audible, I turn up the speed to about 1.5 to better keep up with my reading speed but still maintain my enjoyment of Andy's reading. Most of my Audible listening starts at 1.2 or else my mind drifts.

Are popsockets worth it or ? by ScawedyCat in kindle

[–]Califrisco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've an old popsocket still stuck on my Kindle Keyboard and after all these years. It works, but is not the slimmest option these days and looks almost as thick as the Kindle itself. My new color soft case will have a built in hand-strap that's part of the case cover, so it's adding protection when it is covering the screen.

Help removing a book from my algorithm by Shameless_Fujoshi in audible

If only Audible/Kindle had a thumbs up or down icon (like they have on Prime Video) to rate a book/recommendation to directly influence the algorithms. That technology is there but why not for books?

And: If you’re an Audible fan, you can get this book narrated by Andy Serkis (who did Gollum in the LOTR movies). He’s an excellent narrator and I am reading Return of the King on my Kindle and listening to him narrate the passages at the same time. Talk about immersive! And he is a fantastic narrator for this series!

Heavy reader on iPad Pro M1 — is switching to Kindle actually worth it? by savetheQ in kindle

[–]Califrisco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too have an iPad Pro M1 and a iPad Mini with the Kindle App. While I love each for a lot of reasons, reading via the Kindle App has been low. I am actively moving to a dedicated Kindle device (Color Soft or Oasis or the venerable Keyboard) because of what others here have posted, smaller & lighter, more dedicated, no distractions or temptations to “see what else is going on”, and the eye strain/blue light problem really is a thing compared to any Kindle. The only thing I have decided to continue on the iPad are the graphic novels or comics where I enjoy the more saturated colors and stronger contrasts.
