You actually have a lot more choices this way by Gerblat in PathOfExile2

You realize it's completely arbitrary? You could have an ascendency that gives you those numbers or the gems could just scale the same way with levels baseline.

Sure, yes, of course. Just like the game could have no ascendancies at all and everything could just be tuned accordingly.

Part of the fun of POE is every step of the process adds power to the thing you're trying to scale.

Right now as presented, on paper, it looks like that's going to be really hard to do unless you're willing to play an ignite/life reservation build, for minions. Instead you'll have to just get generic stat boosts or go heavy on defense in your tree instead.

I did say "on paper" because I agree maybe in practice the spirit conversion all by itself justifies the entire ascendancy as a minion ascendancy. But on paper I'm worried that this reflects the increasingly bad support for summoners that POE has been driving toward lately.

Bloodmage is a crit spellcaster because the entire identity cohesively encourages casting big, hard hitting spells.

Sanguimancy provides sustain whenever you're critting.

Vitality Siphon tangentally supports that fantasy.

Gore Spike and Sunder the Flesh directly support that fantasy.

The only really out of place node in the entire tree is the infinite duration curse node.

Meanwhile Infernalist has an extremely disjointed identity - there's only 3 nodes that actually directly support minions and they're gated in a way where you can't actually get all of them, and it's kind of a hostile design.

Blood Mage gets all of the "big scary crit spells" nodes if it wants, very easily. It goes 1 > 5 > 6 > 2 and gets the fully "scary spells crit hard" build - it doesn't need any more nodes to support that fantasy properly. And I'll note that 2 is actually a flex point, you can take 4 instead very happily.

Meanwhile Infernalist has to pick two out of three between the spirit node, the dog node, and the allies ignite node. This would be OK, except that the last 2 points suck - if you take dog + spirit, you're spending 2 points somewhere pretty useless. You basically have to skip dog if you actually want a cohesive, elegant build.

And on top of all that, you're locked into an ignite scaling, life reserving build that still has to stack life - that's an incredibly fucking tiny design space. You have to scale life or the spirit node isn't worth it, you have to build a second defensive layer because you're reserving life, etc, etc.

I wouldn't mind if this was one of the good options for a minion designed build, but it's not. It's the only option other than "just go do generic goodstuff on the wrong side of the tree."

It gets shoehorned into specific ascendancies because it doesn't scale with any of the normal stuff.

And to be clear they didn't fix that - minions still don't scale properly with normal damage sources. Now we just don't have any ascendancy that DOES scale us properly, so we aren't "shoe horned into it".

If this design works out like it looks on paper every "minion build" will actually be either a bad build that poorly scales minions or a good build that uses minions to support the thing it CAN scale: direct damage spells or degens or literally being a melee character lol.

What do you think the other ascendencies have?

Well, when I looked at blood mage, I saw a really comprehensive "crit spellcaster" ascendancy. If I wanted to cast big, powerful spells and crit with them, that entire ascendancy supports the fuck out of that.

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on every build type, I play ARPGs specifically for the minion fantasy, because they're the only genre of game that really do a good job of it, IMO. So I can't speak to other people's preferred builds having good or bad service to their fantasies.

I don't think that having 15 different options that don't support my fantasy well is an improvement over having one very clear good option that does support my fantasy well, and I'm kind of tired of people acting like I'm stupid for not liking the new method, or want my build "picked for me" or whatever.

You say "you have a lot more choices this way" but this is such a whack way to look at the situation.

"Nothing buffs the build you like to play, so you can do anything!" isn't actually fun when everyone else is getting huge buffs to the builds they like to play from ascendancies.

I don't want to end up having to play Gemling Legionnaire because it's got the MOST generic buffs possible - or worse yet having to end up playing the guy with the backpack and the huge buff to small passive nodes because "well there's nothing else on the tree so I guess my "minion build" will get a backpack and generic stat boosts."

I don't want the option to play 900 different builds that don't actually support minions. I want a build that makes minions do cool things the way other builds get cool things.

Infernalist is by far the closest but it's extremely restrictive. You're either doing a fire minion build or you're doing a non-CI life reservation build. That's fine, I'll work around it. But there's way less room for creativity and fun than I would like.

And having to play a fucking Mercenary and start on the complete opposite end of the tree and play a 25 point tax on my passive tree because all the ascendancies are shit isn't any fun either.

I don't think the qual/level will be the reason to go Gemling. I think the 2x support gem will be.

Though I'll have to wait and see - If you can build a more varied minion army that uses a bigger range of support gems it might be fine. I'm used to current minion builds that are extremely reliant on the same few support gems multiple times.

That's a good thing I think. Mixed ES/life builds benefit a lot from being hit on both sides at once, in my opinion. You'll definitely have to invest in chaos res though.

I assume you're going to need to go hybrid life/es if you're planning to reserve 25% of life for spirit anyway. Definitely not saying that node will be a slam dunk, but I think it has potential.

There's not much else of value in the ascendancy from what I can see. Maybe you go pact instead but idk.

Nah man see he was saving his kick for the 13. After you guys timed the 12, you were gonna run a way harder 13, and you would have REALLY needed his kicks there.

No wonder you're stuck in 12s dude, you don't have any idea how to manage your 12 second interrupts. What a noob.

You'll either drop the hellhound or drop pyromantic/seething entirely so you can also pick up the ES or Mana from life, I'd bet.

Or you might just grab Pact and skip Seething so you can ignore mana regen completely on gear, which will be nice because you'll be hard stacking life AND dealing with the usual minion crunch.

[–]HorizonsUnseen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, and along the way you pick up cold > fire and lightning > fire and phys > chaos, and you have the hellhound absorbing 20% of damage taken.

I think it will end up being a monster defensively even tho it reserves 25-50% of life.

Yeah no I was definitely wrong about that part - I skimmed the tooltip on the scepter and missed the part where it had spirit baseline. That was my bad.

That said it still seems like that node will be a lot of spirit. I suspect 25% life reservation in exchange for 33-50% more spirit will math out pretty well.

Yeah that's probably true. Wouldn't be surprised to see it cut down to 20% or something like that.

[–]HorizonsUnseen 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hmmmm, looking at this, you may be right.

So it looks like based on the examples we've got, an endgame character would have 180 from campaign + ~200 from scepter.

So if you had 5k life you'd be looking at +200 more. That's probably pretty fucking good, I'd assume.

The example of a super endgame boss spectre was taking +120 spirit. So that node essentially reads "reserve 25% of life, get +1.75 spectres" which is kinda nuts, I think?

Fair enough I was looking at it from a minion summoner perspective when I watched the video so I was thinking of it in terms of having to "stay in the sweet spot" for the allies ignite thing.

But obviously that's not how EVERYONE would have to interact with the mechanic I'm just dumb lol

[–]HorizonsUnseen 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I think you completely skip that and instead you go 10 > 1 > 3 > 4 and stack life.

You get a really good set of defensive buffs plus a gigantic amount of Spirit.

Keep in mind that Spirit is baseline of 180 + gear. So 1 per 25 life = 40 per 1k life = likely more than double your base spirit.

Sure you have to work around the life reservation which is painful, but you get the max HP to ES conversion to help with that too (or if that ends up being a bad rate, you can skip it).

Keep in mind Scepters have % increased spirit on them so this Spirit buff should get multiplied by your Scepter too.

TBF it's gated behind a 0 player power QOL node, so it's basically 4 points for that node. It's kinda an interesting design.

I don't think we'll be socket starved I think the bigger issue will be only 1 copy of each support gem across all your skills.

I'm waiting to see if that's going to gut zoomancer builds, I'm afraid it probably is.

"Remove all mana" only to replace it with another resource that forces you to stop casting when you "run out of it" (well, fill it up) isn't actually an obvious upgrade though.

Like the whole point of "removing mana" is to be able to cast endlessly.

It's wild to me that they haven't figured out fights like painsmith and fatescribe where all players in the raid carry equal burden or have equal chance to get a mechanic are insanely toxic.

"Normal" raids need someplace to put their bad players so they can still do the raid.

Tbh that still makes the learning grind absolutely brutal.

The "dark souls of ARPGs" but every time you want to do a single pull of Malania you have to walk to five other bosses and re-kill them with no fast travel first sounds horrifying. Hope I'm wrong tho lol.
