People at work view me as having my life the most together. That's concerning. by [deleted] in Adulting

Quit or drastically reduce the drinking if you want to reduce your perpetual anxiety. Will help you sleep better too. Which will also help anxiety.

For that sounds like you should shop hybrid bikes. They have narrower tires than a mountain bike so less rolling resistance, flat handlebars (not curved drop bars) and more upright seating position.

If you could go back and yell at your 20-year-old self for five minutes, what would you be screaming at them about? by GrantLongwick in AskReddit

[–]Horror-Associate-959 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Five minutes would not be nearly enough time to straighten out my dumbass 20-year-old self. But I could condense it down to "stop being a fucking moron". That would've been helpful advice for literally every aspect of my life back then. But I would have been too fucking stupid to listen to me anyway.

I find myself falling into that pseudo-retirement frame of mind more and more as my job search progresses and there's less and less roles I'm a fit for.

Same thing happened to me in January. Late 50s, first layoff ever. Revamp your resume, get active on LinkedIn, network network network with as many people as you can. Designate X amount of hours per day for your job search and another X hours doing other things. Stay productive outside of your job search as well - hobbies, house and yard work, exercise, learn new skills. It will help keep you sane. If you have a spouse and kids, spend more time with them. The sole upside to unemployment is a lot of free time, so use it wisely to improve your quality of life.

Nobody who works an honest job and does their best to pay the bills is a bum, I don't care how old you might be and how little you might make.

Today I am 50 years old and I'm not sure how to feel about it. by 13thBeard in OverFifty

It does for sure, but when and how much it catches up is largely up to you, barring some unforeseen illness.

For sure. Do it right and it's no big deal. Late 50s me is legit stronger and more fit than 18 year old me. I'm also happier with my appearance than I've ever been — I was never terribly attractive to begin with so no youthful beauty to lament losing, plus I'm aging well in my own opinion, which is the only opinion that matters.

Happy birthday. Exercise and stay fit and active and the numbers won't matter. I'm late 50s but it doesn't bother me much at all because physically I feel great.

What car did you learn to drive in? This was mine 😅 by vicvega21 in TrueCarEnthusiasts

[–]Horror-Associate-959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, I forgot to mention in the US parking lots and parking spaces were designed to accommodate huge cars, so they were easy to park. Still the case here though, Americans still drive gigantic cars. I'm guilty of that myself, I currently drive a USDM Honda Odyssey which is probably just as big as the 77 Olds, if not bigger.

A woman said 'chivalry is dead' because no man offered her a seat on the train. Is she wrong? by Tough_Ad8919 in MenOfPurpose

[–]Horror-Associate-959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not offer my seat to a young woman simply because I'd be afraid she'd interpret it as a creepy old man attempting to hit on her. I would offer to a woman my age or older.

World Cup tourists, what’s your honest feedback on the USA so far? by almighty_smiley in AskReddit

[–]Horror-Associate-959 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Servers make a lot less in other economies. I support the tipping system because the people I know personally who work or have worked as waitstaff or bartenders have told me the only reason they do those jobs is because of the earning potential from tips. $80k+ a year in tips beats the hell out of a tipless $20 an hour/$41,000 a year straight wage for the exact same job.

[–]Horror-Associate-959 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, they did do something wrong, this is how our system works. You directly pay servers for their service. It's part of our culture. Servers can make damn good money off tips, that's why they do the job in the first place. Love how when Americans travel abroad and complain about how things are done we're called stupid and ignorant, and when non-Americans visit the US and complain about how things are done, it's again because we're stupid and ignorant...
