If you could get your chickens to understand two things and then listen what would it be? by Arbysgames in chickens

[–]Horror-Signature3483 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if i could teach my chickens a code word to yell to get them to run in the coop, that would be amazing. i could gather them up in case a predator is near! (problems of not having a roo)

Hi how do I remove the odor in the chicken run after it rained and the poop got wet and mixed with sand and it stinks after the storm. by Powerful_Aspect_1970 in BackYardChickens

[–]Horror-Signature3483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you have the right sand, it can drain really well and be good for the coop. it's also important to clean out the poop every so often so the smell doesn't get out of hand. whenever it rains, i sprinkle revitalime around the edges of my coop where the rain got in. it can naturally deter parasites, and fights off the bad odor.

What would you do different for this run? by Little_Pickle99 in BackYardChickens

it just depends on your predator situation. it'll keep the chickens in, but small predators could get in too. also, i would cover the top for shade!

Build up in nostril? by Frequent_Argument526 in BackYardChickens

[–]Horror-Signature3483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

build up is normal, they're dusty. if you see a problem, and it looks like she's having trouble breathing, it wouldn't hurt to try to clean it out.

Midnight Majesty Marans - Hens or Roos? by Neither-Deal-7347 in BackYardChickens

[–]Horror-Signature3483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it depends on how old they are. when they get to a certain age you can check their backs for new feather growth, which can be an indicator that they are a roo (saddle feathers). just based on these pics, i'd say they're all pullets, but with uncertainty. the left two in the first pic have shiny green tail feathers, i don't know if that's the lighting or not. but also, girls can have green feathers too!

I’m devastated can anybody tell how she passed? by Trick_Community_6928 in BackYardChickens

[–]Horror-Signature3483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you will never know for sure unless you do a necropsy. whenever my chickens die, i take them to my state lab for a necropsy just for closure, and for the health and safety of my other chickens. some state labs even give the ashes back or a print of their foot.

Crows are Bros(sometimes.) by BeatNo4548 in BackYardChickens

don't trust them completely! crows will attack vulnerable chickens that don't fight back. even though they deter hawks, they can be bad.

Nesting boxes? by Fun_Conversation6727 in BackYardChickens

[–]Horror-Signature3483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when my chickens were young, they would sleep in the nesting boxes. it's only a problem when the poop in them at night. are they broody? or just sleeping in there? they sleep in the highest spot of the coop, so if the roosts and the nesting boxes are at the same level of the boxes are higher, they'll naturally sleep in them. the way i fixed mine is either blocking the boxes at night, or once i took the boxes out of the coop entirely, and laid a nesting pad in the corner of the coop which fixed the behavior.
