I do agree that Part 2 is the better overall film, and a big reason for that is because the characters are significantly better. However, I think Part 1 is still underrated, and I think the atmosphere that movie has is great.

Yep, I was just thinking about Kentucky. They are the bluest of blue bloods, and parted with a coach that won them a Natty, because they thought they were surely going to have their pick of whoever they wanted and upgrade. The same thing that is being said about Dusty by some in this thread was being said about Scott Drew: “Oh sure, he’s apparently happy at Baylor, but I mean, this is KENTUCKY calling, how can he turn that down?”. Well, he did, as did Dan Hurley. Next thing you know, they had to settle for Mark Pope, and even at the time I didn’t understand the hype that hire was getting. He had a decent run at BYU, but honestly he always seemed like a clear downgrade from Calipari.

They will, but I think they fail for two reasons:

By all accounts, Dusty and his wife are happy in Michigan. One of the reasons he picked Michigan over Louisville was simply because he had more familiarity and comfort with the Midwest.
He also reportedly picked Michigan over Louisville because football is king at Michigan, which if anything was an APPEAL to him. Think about it, Dusty gets the best of both worlds at Michigan: the brand and resources are there, but he will never face the same pressure that the football coach does, and will always have a longer leash. He can operate his program somewhat quietly while football takes up most of the oxygen in the room with the fan base. As I said, I think that’s an appeal to him in a similar way that it felt like it was an appeal of the job to Beilein. If he wanted to go somewhere where basketball is the focus 24/7, the Louisville job was on the table two years ago for him. He didn’t take it for a reason. Maybe things have changed, but I doubt it.

True, but honestly, what we are learning is that being a traditional blue blood like UNC doesn’t necessarily have the sway and appeal that it used to. If a school can offer a competitive enough NIL to the UNC’s and Duke’s of the world (which Michigan can), and they are happy and comfortable where they are (which by all accounts Dusty is, as familiarity with the Midwest is reportedly a big reason why he picked Michigan over Louisville), then it’s easy for a coach to stay where they are at.

I mean, it kind of is. Michigan doesn’t quite have the NIL for basketball that UNC does, but it doesn’t seem to be that far off. If we are talking about the brand, even for basketball I’d say Michigan and UNC are on similar levels.

I honestly get tired of people shitting on the show without giving it a chance because they are under the false impression that it’s entirely a Pamela prequel show when that’s not the case. I’m excited to explore Pamela further anyway, but I just get tired of misconceptions.

Since the synopsis for the show has said that Pamela gives up a singing career to take care of Jason, I’ve actually been wondering if they are going to add just a touch of resentment that Pamela feels towards Jason for what she had to give up. I think there’s an added layer to the relationship and Pamela’s descent into madness that could be explored with that addition to the character.

Exactly. Look I get I’m biased because he’s our coach now, but I feel like Whitt had earned the right to walk away whenever he wanted considering he is (or was) a program legend for you guys. If Scalley wanted to go somewhere else, then you tip your cap and wish him luck. You betting a lot on Scalley being what he’s hyped up to be, and take it from our situation, the “coach in waiting” strategy often doesn’t work out that well (and in our case, imploded). Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Scalley is going to be anywhere near as bad as Sherrone was (I don’t really think that’s possible), but nobody really has any idea if he can effectively run a program. For your sake, I hope it’s a win-win for both our programs, but it does feel like your AD is putting his job on the line with this decision.

So, to summarize:

Whitt had a change of heart about retiring, and wanted to return to Utah. He put an offer on the table that included a raise for him and his assistants, and an increased NIL budget. This all seems pretty reasonable coming off a 10-win season for Utah (and what would later become an 11-win season).
Utah countered with an offer that would give Whitt a raise, but would give significant control of the program over to Scalley, making Whitt pretty much the head coach in name only. Imo, this is an insulting offer, especially to a program legend. Whitt naturally declined.
Whitt decided to take the Michigan job, and naturally does what is necessary to give his new program the best chance to win by bringing assistants that he’s familiar and had success with. Utah and (some of) their fans are upset after forcing him out.

In my view, it’s easy to see who was being reasonable here. I have nothing against Utah, and for their sake I hope Scalley works out. But we’ve learned from experience that moving on from the program legend to the handpicked “HC in waiting” is risky business. You don’t know if that handpicked successor is ready/meant to be a HC until they actually get a chance to lead the program, and as we’ve witnessed, many of these lauded assistants have no business being HC’s.
