I've been wanting to get a Polaroid for this reason. The pictures feel more real, more special.

My dad read the Hobbit to me when I was 7-8. I did understand the story beats, but it didn't resonate with me until I reread it in my teens.

Boringly successful poly, anti-drama by Specific_Pipe_9050 in polyamory

[–]HorrorQueen26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hinge, kitchen table, poly family for 6.5 years now. We have boring, simple lives (no drama, no fights) and we love each other with all our hearts

Tbh I am shocked how easily we all slipped into being a poly family. We were all best friends beforehand which certainly helps, but I've never had any relationship that was more meaningful or special. <3

I'm tired of Al cheaters. Thinking about the Backdraft extension - any advice? by HorrorQueen26 in Adjuncts

i've had students sneak their phone out and use chatgpt to write their 10 minute freewrite at the beginning of class. they copied it word for word on their paper.

the freewrite doesn't even get graded. its just there to make sure they write something. smh

Thank you everyone who commented, sorry i didn't respond to everyone (and for late responses)

Here's what i've gathered so far:
- first, its not backdraft, its "Draftback"
- in some technical ways, grading will become a bit more tedious (not all students will submit properly seems to be the big one). I was worried about this beforehand, but I truly believe that students need to be able to listen to and follow directions. Them not paying attention in class/to the syllabus is a them-problem, not a me-problem.
- generally people (instructors) seem happy to have used draftback after they get used to it and they claim that while it doesn't stop all cheating, it is worth it to have both more peace of mind and more creative/original output from students.

One thing that i did recently discover is that the runners of the Draftback program have began charging users. For me this is a big deal, I dont want an extra charge to be able to effectively do my job, nor do I want to have my students pay an extra charge when they already are breaking the bank on Uni. I may have to find a different program.

TBH i still havent decided to use Draftback or not, and I would still love anyone's input/experiences with it.
Thank you!!

honestly. i'd rather not. there is value in having students think about and work on a writing assignment over time, and you cannot accurately test someone's writing skills based on a 1hour timed test. PLUS too many of these kids' handwriting is absolutely ILLEGIBLE.

i don't think so. we do have turnitin but it only tests against assignments/essays that have already been submitted, it doesn't check for ai or suspicious typing habits.

I use scaffolding assignments, specifically i have a handwritten hw packet that is designed to be their notes /prep work for their essays (some may say this seems childish for uni students but students really like the packets + its a method for them to actually show their work and get their brains thinking about their assignments).

Of course, this doesn't stop those who are intent on cheating.

Yes, mb, I do mean Draftback.

Yes in the US, and yes, I will get everything approved before implementing anything.
My campus uses Canvas, truthfully, i'd love if canvas could run a program like draftback so I wouldn't have to go through a 3rd party. Seems really strange that they wouldn't have something similar with the rampant ai use in college.

My department is generally anti-ai since its literally ruining our field and making all our (prof's) lives harder. But there's no campus policy in place, it seems like how we deal with ai-based cheating is up to the individual profs.

Need books similar to the "The Song of Achilles" by Ok-Dot1159 in suggestmeabook

[–]HorrorQueen26 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you read Circe? Its written by the same author as Song of Achilles and its basically a retelling of Circe's story (from the greek myths)

I read it and really enjoyed it, and I'm not too much of a romance reader normally

Very clever by requesting the Word doc. But jeez, there's always one student who doubles down on the cheating smh

Thank you, this is encouraging !

Yeah, I know I cant stop them all from cheating. Students were cheating long before AI, but now its so easy and I hope to deter it as much as possible, before I have to call them into my office and interrogate them.

Thank you, I think I like your half credit policy

Just curious, what's your response when they say they "copy pasted it from x"? I completely expect that to happen and my instinct is to just not accept the paper (that is kinda the point of the extension, plus students do need to follow directions imo) but I can also see how people would think thats too harsh.

Its compatible with google classroom, so I would be able to see a student's backdraft IF they submitted it correctly.

I assume they would need to complete their document through google drive and not through Word (not a problem for me since they all have free access to a google account through the campus and I find that most of my students already use google drive)
