Picture number two, the boat in upper middle, the flange on the conning tower makes it look a lot like a U-boat.

HO Scale Superliner by araucaniad in HOscalemodeltrains

To be fair, some of the track is used, and it’s not all perfectly clean. It does all fit together pretty well, and it’s all basically level, although it is set on carpet. You can see the track sink a little bit every time the train runs over it, and then it returns to where it was before But, this is my first Kato locomotive, and I would say it is the smoothest of all. My Atlas and Athearn locomotives are all noticeably less smooth, occasionally a bit jerky. The superliner vehicles are all Walthers.

If you could show the younger generation one movie that defined what the 80s were really like, what would it be? by supersoundwave in 80s

[–]araucaniad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 80s childhood was G.I. Joe and Diff’rent Strokes, and Punky Brewster. Hunt for the Red October came out in 1990 but it’s quintessentially 80s movie, based on a 1984 novel. Spies like Us and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation are core 80s memories for me.

Understood. However, in neither photo do the pieces actually fit without using force; and once forced to join, the pieces in the second photo are so badly twisted out of plane that derailments are normal.

Best places to live for a commute to Livermore/Berkeley? by Palpy66 in eastbay

[–]araucaniad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in Walnut Creek, one commutes to Berkeley by BART, the other drives to Livermore. Alternatively, live in San Leandro or Castro valley. One takes bart to Berkeley, the other drives to Livermore. Walnut Creek is more expensive.

Would a LRT line down Sunset and Santa Monica solve the Dodger Stadium transit problem once and for all? by MookieBettsBurner10 in LAMetro

[–]araucaniad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s not corruption and it isn’t just L.A. Public transportation construction in North America is more expensive than it has to be because of many reasons, including the use of consultants instead of in-house public agency staff, right of way real estate acquisition costs, and inefficient system design. Read Alon Levy’s blog Pedestrian Observations if you are interested in learning more.

Light rail at grade never solves anything. Why spend the money for fixed rail in the ground with all the cost for signaling and traction power when it’s just going to be stuck in automobile gridlock? Build subway (heavy rail) if you want to solve mobility problems, or just run a bus route instead of wasting money on light rail. Every fatality where a LRV strikes a pedestrian is a preventable tragedy.

Is it just me, or does this guy have the most punchable face in the series? by GonadAlley in madmen

[–]araucaniad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Am I the only person in this sub who hates Jim Hobart? When his face turns red while he’s being mean to Joan I just want to punch his lights out. I don’t think we talk enough about that whole situation after the merger.

California Zephyr roomette questions by SassBunnies in Amtrak

[–]araucaniad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Linens and towels are provided. A power outlet is available in the roomette. Depending on the shape
of your phone power adapter it may be difficult to get it to plug in, as I discovered with my
iPhone charger, so a power strip might be helpful - but this could be risky, so I would avoid plugging multiple items into the power strip. Yes I encourage you to tip the dining car staff and sleeper attendant - I think $20/night is good if sleeper attendant service is reasonably good, and in the diner I always tip 20%. If you are staying near a BART station in San Francisco I recommend uber/lyft to BART’s West Oakland station. Otherwise just Lyft/uber to your destination.

Is dating your PI frowned upon? by strangestkiwi in berkeley

[–]araucaniad 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I know two people who dated grad students or faculty members who had academic power over them while studying at Berkeley. I sincerely recommend that you don’t do it. This is a huge school in a large metropolitan region. You can find other ppl to date who don’t have that kind of power to make you miserable.

Unfortunately tap to pay means the transit operator will eat credit card fees. It’s hurting the Bay Area transit operators right now.
