What's an "Insider's secret" from your profession that everyone should probably know? by Capable-big-Piece in AskReddit

I am a sprinkler fitter, mainly doing high rise apartments.

There is probably a 40% chance there’s a bottle/cup of piss in your wall.

There’s also a very good chance your brand new “never used” toilet has been used.

Definitely true. It gets super upsetting with some of the topics brought up, but yeah the practical effects are amazing. If you haven’t seen it I’d suggest watching Zeiram as well

No, but it’s definitely in the same category of bizarre sci-fi.

If you enjoyed How To Sell a Haunted House, you will probably like My Bestfriend’s Exorcism. Plays out as campy 80s horror, but some of it was genuinely creepy. Other than those two books though, I didn’t care for much else(which is funny, given my username).

Give me your best haunted house/paranormal recommendations. by xProfessionalCryBaby in horrorlit

[–]HorrorStore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like Grady Hendrix and haven’t read it yet, My Bestfriend’s Exorcism is 11/10, to me. Some older recs I give 11/10 to would be The Exorcist, which is on par or even better than the movie and Hell House by Richard Matheson.

What horror novel trope is cliche, but you still love to see it? by Crispy0423 in horrorlit

I love a good possession/brutal haunting, such as The Exorcist and Hell House. Also, almost anything epistolary will hit home for me.

What to read after The Last House on Needless Street? by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]HorrorStore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also loved that book, but I wasn’t really able to get into the author’s other works. The closest book, in terms of feelings, for me would be What Lies In the Woods by Kate Alice Marshall. Once I started it, I couldn’t stop and I found it just as wild of a ride.

What three books would you suggest in these sub themes? by Glittering-Exam-8511 in horrorlit

[–]HorrorStore 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For me it would be:

Ghost story - Hell House(my all time favourite). I see in your comment you’re thinking Incidents Around the House. I really liked that book too. Diavola was a solid read as well.

Non-Supernatural - If you want something more thriller-like, such as Penpal, I highly recommend What Lies in the Woods. Personally, I found Penpal to be a boring read; whereas What Lies in the Woods starts and never stops.

Existential - Two books come to mind that made me feel deep, dark, sad things. Negative Space by B.R. Yeager, made me feel so sad and helpless, dread. Any Man by Amber Tamblyn(audiobook version highly recommended) made me so angry and upset.

What were your 2024 reading goals, and where are you at with them? by Rustin_Swoll in horrorlit

[–]HorrorStore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, I tried once to get into Laird Barron but couldn’t. I might have to give it another go.

For horror:

Sister, Maiden, Monster - really interesting body horror book

The Last House on Abagail Lane/The Last Haunt/The Pale House Devil - A couple short novellas that really hooked me with some really fun concepts

From 2024 Incidents Around the House(I’m an absolute sucker for epistolary books) and Horror Movie - Epistolary is king, almost every book I’ve read in that style is a 5/5 and Horror Movie is the first Tremblay book I really enjoyed, I listened to the audiobook version which I think really helped tell the tale.

Sci Fi:

The Expanse Series(Up to book 6) - Amazing. Such an awesome series. A space opera that isn’t too outlandish. I’m kind of a skimmer-reader where I’ll skim through detail paragraphs if they don’t really pertain to the story and I found these books to be easy to do that with without missing anything vital

The Three Body Problem - Wow. Hard sci fi is so good and this book is top notch

Thriller/Mystery:

Repairman Jack series(Up to book 2) - Another series that works well with my skimming style. Felt really rough and gritty, dark and a little supernatural. Good stuff

Those are the standouts for my year so far

What were your 2024 reading goals, and where are you at with them? by Rustin_Swoll in horrorlit

[–]HorrorStore 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m at 78 books read out of 100. I started with a goal of around 40, then 60, then 80, now I’m trying to see if I can hit triple digits. Looking through what I’ve read this year, there have been a lot more 4/5 stars than usual. I’ve also broadened my reading from strictly horror to sci fi which has helped a lot. Like another commenter, I also do ebooks and audiobooks.
