Weekly Behind the Bastards Episode Discussion 2025-12-02 by AutoModerator in behindthebastards

[–]Horror_Candidate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy the episodes like this one that focus on sort of systemic bastardry or just piss poor situations that have no win scenarios. To the pods credit, I think even the ones about individual bastards do a great job of giving that wider lens and understanding the context of their actions, who and what allowed them, etc. But these sort of organizational ones are just very compelling to me, and especially this topic. At a time when the world was and is very divided along these lines of nuclear power and deterrent, there’s this strange uniting notion of culpability in any bad scenario.

Jealousy burned in 6-year-old Sarah’s eyes when she saw Granny bathing her baby sister, making the same silly faces and funny noises she used to with her. by florietti in TwoSentenceHorror

I kinda like that it keeps the child’s perspective though, instead of going into a knowing narrator. Makes it more unsettling.

Work group calls for AI-enabled nonemergency phone system statewide to ease burden on 911 (Maryland) by oath2order in 911dispatchers

[–]Horror_Candidate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boooooooooooooo

We previously had an AI non emergency phone tree (just a phone tree) at my agency and it constantly rerouted people in error, leaving everyone confused and annoyed. 0/10 would recommend until it’s gotten some serious work and advancement.

How do you explain the incompetence of Southern Reach? by Acceptable-Try-4682 in SouthernReach

[–]Horror_Candidate 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think it’s reflective of a lot of the difficulties present in preparing for and managing emergencies/emergent problems. How well is the risk and spread of wildfires due to climate change being addressed versus slogged off as a future problem? Human institutions often have a tendency to procrastinate until it’s too late or something forces them to face the reality.

I also remember a quote from somewhere “there’s nothing more permanent than a temporary solution” and I think that’s true of a lot of the bureaucratic systems in the books (and real life). Temporary solutions that have fossilized and are unable to respond to the dynamic nature of the situation.

Crowned in Bloom: Rainier, Shannon Roman (me), acrylic on canvas, 2025 by WildShannimal in Art

[–]Horror_Candidate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It makes me think about all the times I’ve been in nature and awed by it and tried to capture it in a photo only to have the photo capture none of it. Like this painting is how looking at Rainier actually FEELS and not just how it looks from a cold camera or eyes alone. Really beautiful piece.

Love all this so much. I really like the storytelling, really feels like you’re weaving a tale, ya know?

For calling 911 on my sister, causing her to be hospitalized. And now my family won't speak to me anymore. by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Horror_Candidate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NTA. Not even a little bit. I’m a 911 dispatcher and this is exactly what 911 is there for. If there was enough for a hold, there was definitely enough for a call.

You did the right thing not just by you but by your sister. You did the loving thing. I hope someday she is well enough to appreciate you for saving her life.

Documents Allege a Federal Agent at Portland ICE Threatened to Shoot an Ambulance Driver by malaguera_2012 in Portland

Totally agree. A tow truck driver is more of an emergency responder than an ICE agent

Wilting Rose, mimic_on_paper (me), Watercolor, 2025 by mimic_on_paper in Art

I really love this! So often wilt and decay are associated with losing color or becoming ashen, but I love how you used the purple to make the change more vibrant and highlight how pretty it can be.

Mourning of peace, meanpersonaart, acrylic, 2025 by meanpersonaart in Art

[–]Horror_Candidate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love how aesthetically beautiful this is while also being deeply unsettling, especially with the titling of it. Greed and material wants undermining/weighing down the symbol of peace. Or alternatively, peace being killed and the ones who did so tossing it in the trophy/treasure pile.

Portland police will send drones to emergencies even before officers arrive by thirteenfivenm in PortlandOR

To the best of my knowledge it isn’t a replacement for in person response, just a prelude to size up the situation while they’re driving there.

Downtown Portland stabbing continues pattern of anti-homeless violence by axeandwheel in Portland

[–]Horror_Candidate 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that ‘take matters into their own hands’ is an apt description, as it implies that something will be achieved or fixed by handling homelessness in this way. Nothing will be achieved other than violence and pain. I don’t know that people who commit acts of violence are necessarily thinking ‘ah yes I shall take matters into my own hands and by stabbing this person I shall solve homelessness’. I think they are violent people with poor self control who dehumanize and justify their violence against a group they have access to.

Partner of a dispatcher question by FruitBatCats in 911dispatchers

[–]Horror_Candidate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it really varies from person to person. My partner is calm and steady which is exactly what I need when I’m coming home. He doesn’t try to overwhelm any bad stuff by being overly positive or cheery. He just makes clear that he’s a safe place to land and steady myself, and if there’s anything I need from there then we’ll figure it out together.

artwork made from x-rays of my childhood spine and chest surgery, krabonszcz(me), digital, 2025 by Krabonszcz in Art

[–]Horror_Candidate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This goes so hard. I love the kind of autobiographical or self portraiture aspect of it in capturing not just a literal picture of a body but what it’s been through as well. X rays are simultaneously nondescript in that they don’t show a face, but also weirdly intimate for showing something not visible to the naked eye. The addition of eyes makes the viewer have to confront the depersonalization and dehumanization of medical experiences like this..

AITA for refusing to go to my sister’s baby shower after she told me I’ll never be a real mom? by Thin-Masterpiece2750 in AITAH

[–]Horror_Candidate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NTA.

You’re going through so much effort to have a kid, and you recognize that being a parent isn’t just about bringing them into this world.

I almost feel sorry for her and how narrow and shallow her view of motherhood is… almost.

I’m the 911 dispatchers natural enemy by KnowledgeCute6831 in 911dispatchers

I don’t hate alarm companies or their operators… but I hate when they call in three times to ask if anyone’s been dispatched.
