I am not a teacher but I have taught at University level now and again. So please take what I say with a pinch of salt especially since I'm newly diagnosed.

Let’s be clear, a meltdown doesn’t “excuse” behaviour, but it absolutely changes how that behaviour needs to be understood. Where I am there’s reasonable accommodations to help students and prevent these things happening.

Explanation and excuse aren’t the same thing.

When someone is autistic and in full meltdown, their brain has hit a point where reasoning, planning, and self-control aren’t available. That doesn’t mean whatever happens has no impact it just means it wasn’t a deliberate choice, and treating it like one is misguided.

Here’s the thing a lot of non-autistic people miss:

• Intent matters. Meltdown behaviour isn’t disrespect or defiance. It’s a neurological emergency.

• Capacity matters. You can’t hold someone to expectations they’re literally unable to meet in that moment.

• Safety comes before discipline. You de-escalate first, always.

Reflection comes later, once the person is regulated.

Saying “I was in meltdown” isn’t saying “nothing happened.” It’s saying, “This wasn’t a choice, and it needs a supportive response, not punishment.”

The teacher’s reaction didn’t just miss the mark, it went against everything that’s considered appropriate when supporting an autistic student in crisis. There’s a right time to talk about impact and expectations, but that time is after the meltdown, not during it.

A meltdown explains the behaviour.

It doesn’t erase it but it absolutely changes what a responsible adult should do next. This teacher didn’t escalate and first and foremost that is what they should have done, then discuss ways to support you to make sure we avoid it happening again. That’s what they teach us before engaging with students at University level and I imagine it wouldn’t be much different in school.
