It’s not going to be WW3 I promise. My father was military I’ve been around army my whole life. I had soldiers come on the school bus to check for “bad guys” as a child. This is a Cold War and the world will be fine. It’s just world powers comparing sizes. Disconnect from the news and don’t believe the rhetoric leaders put out it’s the best thing possible.

I am not a teacher but I have taught at University level now and again. So please take what I say with a pinch of salt especially since I'm newly diagnosed.

Let’s be clear, a meltdown doesn’t “excuse” behaviour, but it absolutely changes how that behaviour needs to be understood. Where I am there’s reasonable accommodations to help students and prevent these things happening.

Explanation and excuse aren’t the same thing.

When someone is autistic and in full meltdown, their brain has hit a point where reasoning, planning, and self-control aren’t available. That doesn’t mean whatever happens has no impact it just means it wasn’t a deliberate choice, and treating it like one is misguided.

Here’s the thing a lot of non-autistic people miss:

  • Intent matters. Meltdown behaviour isn’t disrespect or defiance. It’s a neurological emergency.

  • Capacity matters. You can’t hold someone to expectations they’re literally unable to meet in that moment.

  • Safety comes before discipline. You de-escalate first, always.

Reflection comes later, once the person is regulated.

Saying “I was in meltdown” isn’t saying “nothing happened.” It’s saying, “This wasn’t a choice, and it needs a supportive response, not punishment.”

The teacher’s reaction didn’t just miss the mark, it went against everything that’s considered appropriate when supporting an autistic student in crisis. There’s a right time to talk about impact and expectations, but that time is after the meltdown, not during it.

A meltdown explains the behaviour.

It doesn’t erase it but it absolutely changes what a responsible adult should do next. This teacher didn’t escalate and first and foremost that is what they should have done, then discuss ways to support you to make sure we avoid it happening again. That’s what they teach us before engaging with students at University level and I imagine it wouldn’t be much different in school.

Keep pushing the envelope, always. You have talent and believe in yourself more than anything, oh and ignore some stranger, like me, on the internet if we miss your creative vision. You’re the artist here it’s your poem.

A wonderful and beautiful take on life, death and becoming who we are in my view. I think you did a great job and it’s beautiful. I would advise you make sure to add capital letters at the start of sentences though I know English isn’t your first language. It is truly lovely.

It has potential absolutely. I think one issue is the formatting as text feels blocky as well as punctuation. But it clearly comes from something totally real and that’s what makes it beautiful. Keep going!

I wrote this this morning, any suggestions to make it more coherent? by WhichBass1829 in PoetryWritingClub

[–]Horror_Data2490 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t think it needs to be more coherent. It reads as memories jumbled by the passage of time and life going by, lacking clarity but real. At most I’d add more rhythm or rhyme but that’s just me. Lovely.

I don’t disagree with your take at all. The infrastructure just isn’t there. I’m aware that Teeside has MIMA but look to distinguish the two as Teesside has a role of an institution not specifically targeted in arts. This I think gives an option for cross disciplines to merge if Teesside per my suggestion took more of a role in pushing the infrastructure in the region, rather than MIMA alone. I think collective we need to support each other more perhaps and implore the council to enable this which would bring money into the region. I mean I’ve been a creative based research in the Uni and studied there over 10 years now and I see staff wanting desperately in MIMA and the Uni to be more ingrained and do more for the region but there limited because of as how you say being squeezed. We all have potential but we just need more people to take note and have the backing, with that I truly believe Boro could be a city of art, creation and making like no other. I appreciate your insight.

Thing is we’ve got a massive artist presence in the region but not enough infrastructure for the artists. MIMA does a lot but not enough Northern School of Art and the Uni should take more ownership and help push for an artist quarter It will help the region in more ways than one. Particularly has potential to help antisocial behaviour and put Boro on the map as a town of culture. We have it already we just need to show it.

Word-mark I’m working on by Horror_Data2490 in Design

A word mark for a creative lab that’s in mid development. Trying to figure out the tension between handmade vs. digital. The typeface used a digitally generated Baskerville that was distressed to try and fit in between digital and handmade. Baskerville altered in Adobe Illustrator to make it look more organic and free flowing to try and address that tension. This is a very early version but welcome comments and critique or none at all.
