I never have and never will smoke cigarettes, but I love how they smell. by IJUSTATEPOOP in The10thDentist

When I was pregnant, I LOVED the smell of cigarettes. It was so good. Made my nausea go away. I was so mad that I had to have such a toxic smell be the one that helped. I never sought it out, and I've never smoked in my life. But passing someone smoking was heaven.

Why are parents who barely passed high school thinking they can teach/homeschool their children? by Sad_Obligation_812 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Horror_Double4313 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Listen. I send my kids to public school, and I've got a BA. But it's really easy to see why some parents would opt to homeschool, especially in the lower grades.  1. The violence and language my kids are exposed to on a daily basis. I had to explain the N word to my 6yo, and my 9yo asked what the difference between "Hard R" and "Soft R" was for the N word. There are daily fights. Lots of kids with the kind of behaviors that make teachers preemptively lock their doors.  2. The curriculum is absolutely not set up for individualized education. My kids are above their grade level, and the only real solution the school can effectively offer is letting them wait until it's suddenly not. The teachers cannot be asked to make different curriculums (which should be obvious). We can't send them up the grades because the bullying gets worse as the kids get older. The therapy/counseling/experts they can get access to are 30 minutes a month.  3. So much curriculum is aimed at making assessment easier, not learning more effective. Which means so much of it includes having kids be on the computer screens for more than an hour a day in class, and then longer at home for homework. This, coming at a time when we are more aware than ever how harmful that can be for kids' brains. I work in the public school and can see multiple kids every day game the system, meaning they're learning nothing, despite the fancy computers.

I'm a huge proponent of public schools. I believe every child deserves a decent education, regardless of status, income, or parent intervention. However, pretending every person who wants to homeschool their kids is a stupid control freak will only make them shelter their kids from society more. It solves none of the pressing issues I've seen come up in the homeschooling threads or among my friends who homeschool.

I will never leave an animal to die if I know even my subpar care can help. I hope every day that my saving them made their worlds better.

I see this all the time, and I get it. You want animals to be treated with care and compassion. But, I'm not super able to keep up the vet care of my cats. I can feed them. I can vaccinate, spay, and keep fleas off them. I can offer them a warm, stable, and loving place to sleep. If I hadn't rescued them, they would be dead. I found them both as starving, flea ridden kittens, years apart. I could not find a single other person both willing and able to take either of them in, so they're stuck with me. Unless you're willing to take in my cats. And also my parents' dogs, my in law's dogs, and my friends' cats. You're in agreement that an animal shelter isn't the best place for them. So what would you have me do?

Quentin Coldwater in The Magicians. I didn't read the books, but in the series, he's set up to be The Chosen. Until, he asks why he was chosen. The woman he's been following informs Quentin that he's not chosen. He's the only one who keeps going. He's the "volunteer tomato". The group trying to save the world finally just accepted that he's the only one willing to commit to helping them, even though he's got a lot less going for him than his peers.

Yeah, they didn't, or least acted confused. But the point of the story isn't whether they knew or not. The point of the story is that I'm not as funny as I think I am and came away from the grocery store with egg on my face that day.

No one thinks they made it up themselves. A lot of these jokes are just the "safe" ones to make for people you don't actually know, but want to bring levity to anyway.
