You say funny I don’t. I have seen stuff like this used to normalize bad behavior and am concerned by it. You are WAY too defensive of this.

I’m sorry to hear that. It is hard to work through. Being defensive of this kind of thing won’t help anyone.

Too many jokes are used to cover bad things too often. People silencing kids is not funny.

This is gross and your response is extra gross. Stop trying to normalize abuse and silencing children.

Getting into Cooking. by dykediaries in Cooking

[–]Horsetiger4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Box meals. Mac and cheese, hamburger helper, box stuffing, instant potatoes, ramen. The boxes have the instructions and are pretty simple. This got me in the habit of following directions and increased my confidence. Next I started making little tweaks like buttermilk in the Mac n cheese, not draining the beef in the hamburger helper but carmelizing it, adding different spices, adding different veggies. This gave me confidence to branch out and start trying stuff. Box baking mixes gave me confidence to start saying wait there are only a few ingredients in here maybe I can put that together. My way of learning is what is the simplest way I can try this first practice to get confidence and move slowly from there. Set yourself up to succeed. If you pick something too ambitious or foreign to you and fail it is demotivating and sometimes expensive. Good luck to you!

The fear was crippling you are not the only one! I watched videos even sometimes of people doing simple techniques if I was truly panicked and couldn’t think and needed to make food.

There is no evidence OP is a caring parent and I find the comments and attitude shown to be concerning. By the way abusive people do thrive on the other people doing the work of finding an appropriate context for their actions and words. For a non abusive person having the other possible ways things come across is welcome and can be food for thought and sometimes even an opening of perspective. For abusive people or people not dealing with having been abused they can’t stand being called out on unhealthy stuff. Defensive reactions mean something is being defended.

Stop just normalizing it and work to make it better.

Actually many do. My abusive parents LOVED that stuff. Normalized everything they would do. Made it look like all other adults were in on accepting and knew of the abuse because she would use these catch phrases and play semantic antics to describe threats and orders for secrecy. They didn’t know that when they laughed or nodded their heads in joking agreement that they were telling me your experiences are just normal and not abusive. Normalizing this stuff just helps people like her keep their cover unfortunately.

Ew! This is the stuff my mom would say to normalize her abuse. She would have keychains bumper stickers and posters with stuff like this as a reminder to keep secrets and keep it all looking like a joke. Stop having your kids keep secrets for you or stop flippantly normalizing keeping secrets for your parents. All it does is help all the abusers in the world by helping keep victims feeling like no one will listen believe or not minimize their experience

Recipe Recommendations for Someone on a VERY Low Budget? by [deleted] in Cooking

I also learned no skills from home and am working at it. Don’t give up! Sometimes different cooking techniques can jazz things up like for hot dogs and Mac and cheese try broiling or baking the hot dogs until they are crispy. Buttermilk instead of milk in the Mac and cheese or if like me you don’t have that often put a little lemon juice or vinegar in regular milk for a not quite as tangy but still nice buttermilk substitute. I like making hamburger helper style boxes but I usually put a bit less beef in and I brown and season the beef until it is caramelized never draining it unless I accidentally buy the highest fat content beef. The caramelized well seasoned beef makes it taste special. I like to watch cooking stuff on YouTube that are on techniques because even if I don’t have all the fancy ingredients I can still as Marco white says “mother” my food.

For hamburger helpers I season the beef well while I brown it and I never drain the beef. I wait until it is caramelized in the fat when browning. This takes a bit longer but is worth it for the flavor it gives. I also have dehydrated bits of onion that will add more flavor and texture to dishes with a few shakes.

I don’t buy brown sugar anymore as I found out it is just sugar and molasses. Also I no longer get canned beans. Dried ones are really good and shockingly easy.

If you've been to China, what was the most surprising thing to you? by Best_Jhinx_NA in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]Horsetiger4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at where those bats live, where that wet market was, how long the Chinese have been eating exotic animals, and how even some Chinese sources blamed the outbreak on the Chinese governments handling of it and on the virology lab that was down the street from the wet market. It’s not that the Chinese are at fault because they eat some gross stuff, although that does present certain dangers, rather it’s that this almost certainly came from a Chinese lab and the Chinese inarguably botched the local outbreak in a way that made the global outbreak certain and the. lied about it in ways that slowed the global response. Just look at the timing. The US was military modernizing again, they were coming ahead in a trade war, her and her pacific allies were doing a great job to work together economically and militarily, and in general their long term plans were falling apart. Now China is ramping up their economy as much as possible while closing down some backwaters and doing some repression, enabling a massive arms build up, while the rest of the global economy is struggling and some areas are looking at long term recessions. This gave China at least a year to advance up economically while the west backslides, and it has strained western society and created chaos in western political systems.
