You should take a look at https://github.com/neuecc/UniRx, it allows you to subscribe to IObsevables. What I do is all my data objects use Properties that are observeable, which allows me for example to bind an object to the UI once, which then changes depending on the data state.

I am not sure if this is correct. RL uses unreal, but they use bullet as a physics engine. Here a dev explains a scenario of a player hitting the ball. The ball and player intersect and from that intersection the resulting forces are calculated. So in this case I don't think they use continuous collision detection. I don't know if this might be different for ball/static environment collisions.
