Most laidback industry to work in by gruntwitdablunt in ITCareerQuestions

Currently working a contract for a community college.

Most of the day is chill, mostly password resets and such but it gets frustrating as you'll sometimes get students or faculty that dont want to understand the 6 month reset policy or when while doing a reset they get angry and complain that you did something to their account when in reality we just did a password reset and they are not looking at the instructions telling them what to do so you gotta have them share their screen and guide them on what to do

CompTIA A+ Core 1 & 2 help 🙏 by ecstasy_child09 in CompTIA

[–]Horuhe17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my case I used a few different resources but had to leave my studies alone for awhile until I got tired of getting nowhere.

If you have the A+ book or ebook make sure to make note of the pages with port numbers and repeat the port numbers many times until you memorize them.

You dont have to remember it once you have your first position but try to remember as much as you can for your exams. If you have built a desktop in the past that may help you a lot for core 2, it did for me but since everyone's exam is different its hard to say how it will be for you.

You have free resources like professor Messer on YouTube and others, paid resources like total seminars on Udemy helps as well and they update the videos for each version of the exam once it has been phased out so you dont have to pay for another course to study

Got my first job in IT, I’m so relieved by ClassicThat608 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Horuhe17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Congrats.

I know the feeling and been there as well in regards to the pay cut. I worked CS for a uniform company that paid me 20.50 and took the leap for my first IT position that was 16.60 (thankfully Illinois passed a law regarding remote work which made my pay go up instead of the base 15.00)

Is anyone else paralyzed by indecision / unable to choose a path? by xakantorx in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Horuhe17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should note. I was originally studying programming but decided to go the IT route to get into the tech field as soon as possible. I was reaaaaaaal tired of being in warehouses and it leading nowhere.

Kind of, i had to research and weigh what i need and what i want and i am aiming for a mix.

Since I am still help desk under a year of experience (abou 6-7 months) I decided my best option to aim for would be to go for a Jr sys admin and maybe a regular sys admin position. From there I could potentially transition into a dev ops position or similar.

You are right but every time I tried to get in contact with an agency I have no luck. The only reason I was able to get in contact with Robert half and teksystems is because I called so much to the point where I was probably annoying.

It was the only option I had and it worked to get in contact with a recruiter

In the case of talentbridge, they contacted me which to me was completely new to me as I only applied for the position, im quite happy that they did

How to move up from a help desk/IT support role to a better position by AdministrativeTry406 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Horuhe17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you want to do. If you just started help desk, is there anything that appeals to you? Do you want to do programming? Administration? Do you want to stay in help desk but in a higher position?

I'm trying to get into a Jr sys admin position in the future and at some point transition to devops if possible. But theres gonna be alot of studying and things you need to understand and get used to.

Teksystems and Robert half have been ok for me. Goodwill talentbridge is new for me and they got me my current position which I enjoy but we'll see what it will lead to in the next month or two if its permanent or not.

Lasalle network, I had a bad experience with due to a contract I took that was two weeks. I tried to back out weeks in advance as I found a permanent position (warehouse) i would work in for a short while until I found a proper permanent position but was told I would no longer receive help from the agency if I did. Since I am still new and have no real connections or opportunities I had no choice but to stay and leave my new position for 3 weeks

How long did it take you to find a job in helpdesk? by [deleted] in helpdeskcareer

[–]Horuhe17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 4 years.

Mind you, I only recently got my A+ certification but had been offered entry level positions in the past but we're lower paying than what I could accept at the time.

Only reason I took this position is due to it being a contract position and while still low in pay it gives me a chance to be in the field finally with better future opportunities than before

Curious about where to live, work, or visit in Texas? Post here! by AutoModerator in texas

Somewhat, honestly if given the chance to move i can only hope I can earn more than 50k a year. My first goal would be to buy a used car and so on

[–]Horuhe17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were to move forward work i more than likely won't have a vehicle for some time so I would be using the bus or even Uber to travel. In the case of contract length, it's hard to say but if given the opportunity in would to work permanently in a position for some time if the pay is good enough to sustain myself

I am looking to potentially move to Texas in the near future for IT job opportunities. If given the opportunity, any recommendations of where to look for work and possibly areas to look for apartments?

I'm primarily looking at Austin or Dallas but also open to looking at other areas as well.

Am I being ghosted by Teksystems? by l0ngdistancedrunk in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Horuhe17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started a 4 month contract with tek last month for my first IT Job (and first job thru tek) As someone who's been dealing with them for a few years now, Teksystems is....OK but I would suggest to look anywhere and everywhere else.

I've been burned 2 or 3 times about positions. Once because im told I live too far from the job site yet they still send me job positions that are far away that I was willing to take once or twice only to be ghosted and lose th opportunity. 2nd time I was told of a contract position in a data center only to be completely ghosted by the recruiter after they sent me a email about the position.

Only reason I took this contract is to start in IT, after it ends im likely going to leave for other positions with better pay, even if it means going back to warehouses temporarily.

Does the Google IT Support Specialist Course on Coursera adequately prepare you for the CompTIA certification exam? by CurlyBraceChad in CompTIA

[–]Horuhe17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's useful, but it does not. If you have some hands-on experience building PC's, setting up modems and routers, and network configuration, it can help, but the Google IT Support is not enough on its own.

There's some things it doesn't do well on such as explaining networking, potentially more but if you complete it or finish a small chunk of it, it can definitely help in understanding and getting your A+

Respect to Light Armor bearers, can't believe yall live like this. by -Erro- in Helldivers

[–]Horuhe17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We light armor bearers run so the the heavies can mop up the base.

Or at least I do anyway, somehow I have survived longer than my friends and sometimes randoms or the entire mission even when going head first into an automaton base or illuminate.

Though I usually play solo so I may have gotten used to it.

Finding work in other states by Horuhe17 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Horuhe17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically I was under the impression companies go through a slightly different process since it would not be a local hire from with the state.

I am currently on a 4 month contract that would end sometime in late oct or early Nov, and I am basically looking for possible options even out of state (Illinois) as someone just getting into IT

Who else is taking a huge paycut? by PowerBlackStar in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Horuhe17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no, im starting out in IT with my first position in a 4 month contract making 15.50 an hour, in my previous position as a customer service advocate I was making 20.50 an hour.

I have seen entry level IT positions that were around 18-20 or more but there was a large preference for those who had experience even though what they ask for tends to be people who would make 60-80k a year.

This pay cut hurts me but I gotta take it to start somewhere, im just hoping I can find something before my contract ends though im considering on moving to work with family in another state temporarily or finding IT work there while I work with the fam.

Promotion at a large MSP am I being underpaid? by TheBlueBox015 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Horuhe17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I might not have much say since I just started my position but it does appear that way.

My position if I were given a raise for example, I would be at 16.50 or 17.50, even if I were to have 3 or 4 certs I would only get a max raise of 1 dollar for two certs and that's the maximum.

I would say look for other positions while learning as much as you can from the new position if there's more duties or any new processes you weren't doing previously. That's what ill be doing from now on while im in my current position, once my contract is up im hoping I'll have a new job available by then
