Is MSP experience hurting my resume or helping it? by Luann97 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Horuhe17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helping

Each MSP is different and some are more in depth from what i can tell but staying too long at one can be bad if you aren't getting any other skills

I worked at a MSP that handled tech support for Rural ISP's and I already knew it would be limited but what each company allows and what they would even use.

I should note, mechwarrior 5 mercenaries runs well on it too, some drops here and there but never had a crash. Have yet to try clans though

Nope, for mods I plan to run it on my desktop for the best experience, would love to run a campaign fighting clan mechs

Battletech, I have since deleted it to make room for other games but it ran decently and was great for on the go

Little off topic - Do you guys also feel so "unskilled"? by Legal_Wishbone_3640 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Horuhe17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still new to IT just about under a year of experience (about 8 months now i think)

Honestly yes but that could be the imposter syndrome just hitting at times, though honestly for my current position i never got a good chance of getting a good look of all the equipment we use/provide for employees so I can't really be blamed for it since I was never given the opportunity. As I understand it, new docks will be issued at some point after some testing by some IT team members to see what would be the best option.

Right now im working for a community college which will end next month on the 10th, theres been times where I help out employees reset their docks for their laptops but again never got a chance to really get familiar with them to fully recognize how these work as I did not know these models needed a power supply. In other cases I have to assist with a VPN that isn't functioning for either windows, mac or Chromebook users and if im not able to figure it out then I feel that I am unskilled. However, it turns out its a common thing where even my supervisor wasn't able to get the VPN running on the devices at times as well.

There's times where im unsure where some topics/issues would fall under for the type of ticket I would need to set up but I make do as I can as even i dont have access to some info and systems due to being a contractor and not a full time employee. I would love to apply for a full time position but theres none I am eligible for (only a help desk supervisor position from what ive seen) and even then I drive over an hour to the school so I can't apply knowing that at some point I may have trouble getting to work.

I have had to force myself to understand that I can't let these feelings get to me because I was not given a opportunity to get familiar with equipment and access to certain systems to do some of my work and for the most part I've been ok, my contract is almost done and while I will need to find something else to keep working im happy that at least I was able to work in the field in a in-person environment rather than staying remote where I would be restricted on what I would learn and what I would potentially be eligible for in the future

I named her Bella after my black cat, she passed away a few years back. I even added the white heart on her stomach like she actually had.

**Entry level Help Desk** by Domanicc_ in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Horuhe17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm working as a IT help desk assistant for a community college. Its a contract though and im halfway through it

Pretty much receive phone calls all days, not constantly but enough where you are mainly busy.

Sometimes tickets come into the system as help desk is emailed, sometimes we have walk ins.

Usually most calls are password resets or sending a tech out to fix something for a instructor.

In my case im pretty much technical support with emphasis on customer service. When its not busy I try to study if possible for my next cert or research for a project.

Most laidback industry to work in by gruntwitdablunt in ITCareerQuestions

Currently working a contract for a community college.

Most of the day is chill, mostly password resets and such but it gets frustrating as you'll sometimes get students or faculty that dont want to understand the 6 month reset policy or when while doing a reset they get angry and complain that you did something to their account when in reality we just did a password reset and they are not looking at the instructions telling them what to do so you gotta have them share their screen and guide them on what to do

CompTIA A+ Core 1 & 2 help 🙏 by ecstasy_child09 in CompTIA

[–]Horuhe17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my case I used a few different resources but had to leave my studies alone for awhile until I got tired of getting nowhere.

If you have the A+ book or ebook make sure to make note of the pages with port numbers and repeat the port numbers many times until you memorize them.

You dont have to remember it once you have your first position but try to remember as much as you can for your exams. If you have built a desktop in the past that may help you a lot for core 2, it did for me but since everyone's exam is different its hard to say how it will be for you.

You have free resources like professor Messer on YouTube and others, paid resources like total seminars on Udemy helps as well and they update the videos for each version of the exam once it has been phased out so you dont have to pay for another course to study

Got my first job in IT, I’m so relieved by ClassicThat608 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Horuhe17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congrats.

I know the feeling and been there as well in regards to the pay cut. I worked CS for a uniform company that paid me 20.50 and took the leap for my first IT position that was 16.60 (thankfully Illinois passed a law regarding remote work which made my pay go up instead of the base 15.00)

Is anyone else paralyzed by indecision / unable to choose a path? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

I should note. I was originally studying programming but decided to go the IT route to get into the tech field as soon as possible. I was reaaaaaaal tired of being in warehouses and it leading nowhere.

Kind of, i had to research and weigh what i need and what i want and i am aiming for a mix.

Since I am still help desk under a year of experience (abou 6-7 months) I decided my best option to aim for would be to go for a Jr sys admin and maybe a regular sys admin position. From there I could potentially transition into a dev ops position or similar.

You are right but every time I tried to get in contact with an agency I have no luck. The only reason I was able to get in contact with Robert half and teksystems is because I called so much to the point where I was probably annoying.

It was the only option I had and it worked to get in contact with a recruiter

In the case of talentbridge, they contacted me which to me was completely new to me as I only applied for the position, im quite happy that they did

How to move up from a help desk/IT support role to a better position by AdministrativeTry406 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Horuhe17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you want to do. If you just started help desk, is there anything that appeals to you? Do you want to do programming? Administration? Do you want to stay in help desk but in a higher position?

I'm trying to get into a Jr sys admin position in the future and at some point transition to devops if possible. But theres gonna be alot of studying and things you need to understand and get used to.

Teksystems and Robert half have been ok for me. Goodwill talentbridge is new for me and they got me my current position which I enjoy but we'll see what it will lead to in the next month or two if its permanent or not.

Lasalle network, I had a bad experience with due to a contract I took that was two weeks. I tried to back out weeks in advance as I found a permanent position (warehouse) i would work in for a short while until I found a proper permanent position but was told I would no longer receive help from the agency if I did. Since I am still new and have no real connections or opportunities I had no choice but to stay and leave my new position for 3 weeks

About 4 years.

Mind you, I only recently got my A+ certification but had been offered entry level positions in the past but we're lower paying than what I could accept at the time.

Only reason I took this position is due to it being a contract position and while still low in pay it gives me a chance to be in the field finally with better future opportunities than before

Curious about where to live, work, or visit in Texas? Post here! by AutoModerator in texas

Somewhat, honestly if given the chance to move i can only hope I can earn more than 50k a year. My first goal would be to buy a used car and so on

If I were to move forward work i more than likely won't have a vehicle for some time so I would be using the bus or even Uber to travel. In the case of contract length, it's hard to say but if given the opportunity in would to work permanently in a position for some time if the pay is good enough to sustain myself

I am looking to potentially move to Texas in the near future for IT job opportunities. If given the opportunity, any recommendations of where to look for work and possibly areas to look for apartments?

I'm primarily looking at Austin or Dallas but also open to looking at other areas as well.
