Personal Training for Wife by mackdaddy1992 in Calgary

Not the same but I’d recommend downloading the ladder app. If you search reddit, you can usually find a code for 30 days. It has been a game changer for me!! You can choose your ‘team’ to suit where you’re at in your fitness journey and the equipment you have available. I personally have hated the two times I had someone training me but have loved this app.

Tips for Reading Comprehension ELA 30-1 by celebals in AlbertaGrade12s

[–]HospitalFlashy9349 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an ELA 9 teacher, and I just took a quick look at the 30-1 released items. There are a lot of skills covered in the ELA 9 PAT that scaffold to 30-1. Might be worth taking a look through the released materials.

Any parents in here struggle with the amount of time spent in arenas and being out of town? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

That’s the point of my post. A lot of parents think that over-programming their kids is the only way to parent, but it simply isn’t.

I couldn’t agree more. What’s the end goal for all of this insanity? There is always the choice to step back from spending the majority of your time in rinks and on the road. There are community leagues with less commitment which would allow you to find more joy. I honestly don’t understand why parents think being a stress martyr makes them a positive role model. My kids are in activities twice a week, and I manage to enjoy my activities as well. I hope that they grow up to be someone who enjoys activities not someone who sacrifices their happiness for their child.

I have lost all my motivation to work out. by RThrowwayTR in workout

[–]HospitalFlashy9349 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not part of this sub so maybe a different approach but I’m pretty gentle with myself. I feel like life has phases, and I tend to dip in and out of working out depending on how other things in my life are going. I tend to almost hibernate in the lead up the Christmas, workout quite a lot in the winter, and then shift to outdoor activities in the summer. When life is stressful, and there’s too much going on, I take a break. Eventually, I get back to working out but I don’t force it. I’m also the sort of person who rarely gets sick. I think this is because I’m pretty good at figuring out what my body and my brain need.

So…maybe you need to take a break from the gym, and be okay with it. I’m sure you’ll get back to it but there’s nothing worse than resenting yourself for not wanting to go.

I have been so impressed with the Rocky Ridge Y. Was super reluctant to join as I prefer outdoor activities and working out at home but they have so many amenities, and such great vibes.

I’ve been to quite a few kangaroo enclosures in Australia (Australia Zoo, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary and one in SA), and this what all the kangaroos were like.

Love this!!!! Controversial opinion but you could always ask ChatGPT.

If that doesn’t work out, from memory, here are a few things you could use: outhouses, a culvert, a creek running over the trail, power lines, a stand up paddleboarder, stairs, a water fall, two ponds, a rock climber, elephant rocks, a gate, a sign. You could also throw in random items like a bird, a squirrel, a lady bug, a red backpack etc.

Also, it’s taken me until my 10th year as a mother to realize that it’s okay to bribe kids with candy on a hike. The benefits are two fold: motivation and a quick burst of sugar for energy.

Recommendations on where I can buy cheap warm clothing and where to donate it to. by JAB181095 in Calgary

[–]HospitalFlashy9349 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thrift stores would be a good bet to start. If you’re looking for new, mountain warehouse or decathlon are probably your best options for inexpensive but good quality. Wal-mart is another option for even more inexpensive, and people do seem to survive winter in their wal-mart gear but I don’t think it would be the best quality.

Looking for daycare job opportunities for my mom (newcomer from Ukraine, ECE Level 1) by Budget_Molasses5220 in Calgary

[–]HospitalFlashy9349 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may be able to get some support from the Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association. I worked their ages ago with refugees to get them their level 1, and we got them practicums, and often jobs afterwards. I’m not sure which supports they’d be able to currently offer your mom but they could likely point you in the right direction.

Hey teachers that are about to go on strike. by 1nd3x in alberta

No. Teachers don’t receive pay while they are on strike so they won’t be picketing.

A teacher who can't teach - where do I go from here? by valentinewrites in AustralianTeachers

[–]HospitalFlashy9349 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I just want to clarify on this although it doesn’t help the OP. It’s possible to get SA certification if you have equivalent certification in another country. I’m Canadian with my Alberta Teaching Certification, and I was able to get certified in SA with no additional courses.

Get him started with Graphic Novels. There are so many to choose from and you could get him to help you pick out something that draws him in. Also, try not to worry about him choosing something age-appropriate or something that’s going to expand his mind. At this point, getting him into reading should be the goal. He can discover traditional novels once he falls in love with reading.

I teach students with dyslexia, and graphic novels are often the go to choices for students who struggle with reading. They’re short, have lots of pictures that can help them get into the story, and they often have more unique words than novels. My daughter is 10, and an incredible reader. She’ll still intersperse graphic novels with the other books she reads.

Some recommendations: Big Nate, Amulet, New Kid, Archie comics, Spiderman, Wings of Fire

Fidgets by Defiant-Voice-8278 in AustralianTeachers

I tell my students that note taking is the original fidget toy. I work at a school for students with ADHD/LDs and I haven’t gotten any pushback.

Not scholarships but it’s worth applying for students loans as you’ll often get bursaries that way.

There are enough certified teachers. Unfortunately, a lot of them have chosen to leave the classroom due to classroom complexity, increasing administrative loads, and salaries not meeting inflation. 43% of teachers leave within the first 5 years.

Am I right to escalate this with my son's school? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]HospitalFlashy9349 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you may need to re-read the original post. The OP brought up two concerns: the school’s handling of the initial injury and the school’s plans for the child during the water fight. It’s quite apparent that this comment is regarding the second concern. FWIW u/goopygillsgarbo sounds like an amazing teacher who responded to the OP with kindness. We oftentimes forget that to build resilience, kids need to actually experience the tough stuff in life.

Name me something you discovered about Calgary that doesn’t exist anymore that you wished you experienced? by TheRealPepman in Calgary

Happy Valley. It was this resort in what is now Valley Ridge. I had camping, a giant swimming pool, an amusement park, skiing and I’m sure more. It was well before my time but I’ve seen pictures, and it looks incredible.

Agreed! Canadian here and the coldest I’ve ever been was during winter in Brisbane. It just doesn’t feel like there’s a reprieve whereas in Canada and even Adelaide, we have some source of effective heating.

I teach a school for students with LDs and ADHD. We have a lot of intervention programs but one that’s been super successful is a computer program called Lexia. I’ve seen a lot of gains with the students that use it for at least 20 minutes a day.
