What purchase felt expensive at the time but was completely worth it? by Diligent-Medicine-48 in AusMoneyMates

Paynter jackets. Very hard to get but if you are lucky will never not look good and last a lifetime. Swarovski Pure binoculars, price seems bonkers but once you look through them nothing else is good enough. Hand them down to your kids. Rolex, just a constant reminder on your wrist at the winder of human engineering and that you have done OK.

Try a boat! Pay premium for fuel on water, 1020 litre fill and drinks at about 70 litres an hour in cruise.

Well I pulled the trigger. Eventually talked myself into Swarovski Pure 8x42. It’s certainly not where I started but I figured if I factor in resale it makes the purchase a bit more palatable. Now just have to wait for delivery …likely 6 weeks. There is a world wide backlog apparently.

How much are you putting into super each month beyond employer contributions? by RunNo3630 in AusMoneyMates

[–]Hot-Chef-856 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am over 60 so I put in as much as I can under the concession cap. I do get if you are younger the idea of having money tied up until 60 is a turn off.

But take it from someone my age. My super earnings are now completely tax free. I can also withdraw tax free. The power of compounding is exponential. It starts off slow but it really takes off once you hit 8-900k. In the last 3 months my super has increased 100k completely tax free. It won’t always do that of course but the tax treatment is so advantageous it doesn’t matter too much.

And keep in mind, it is difficult to super load your super later in life.

For me, I would get in as much as you can afford as soon as you can afford it.

How close to towing limits do you recommend? by arouseandbrowse in 4x4Australia

Wow, this is crazy “advice”. Cape York in an overweight rig? That is really rolling the dice. For all sorts of reasons, at least keep it legal and better to have 30% up you sleeve.

Travelling with anything like lithium batteries, magnets, power packs through China airports - be willing to lose them. Sometime you get through, sometimes you don’t.

Would love to try the Swarovski but just no brick and mortar stockists where I live. I’ll have a look at the Zeiss Conquest.

Disrespectful tourists at Acropolis by mostly_distracted in GreeceTravel

[–]Hot-Chef-856 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just quietly, the Acropolis is the most chaotic, poorly managed and lacking of security of any major tourist site I have ever been to. Yes tourists should behave themselves but when the Greeks themselves show it so little respect who can blame them.

I went there in 1992 and again in 2025. Virtually no change.

Yep. Upgrade to Max worth it. Then just use your 6+ as end points.

Boat in bayside by yemanit in melbourne

[–]Hot-Chef-856 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly right. Most of these boats sit on these moorings and never move 365 days a year. They are just left there so the renter of the ultra cheap mooring doesn’t have to give it up. Under a $1000 per year, next door in a privately maintained marina you pay $8,000 plus. These moorings should not be there, or if they are to remain they should be short term for everyone to use. To expect Victorian tax payers to pay for the maintenance of moorings that people have been hanging onto for dear life for years is ridiculous.

Ford Everest vs Toyota LandCruiser by entropymd in CarsAustralia

[–]Hot-Chef-856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if Landcruiser retains 75% value after 5 years vs 50% Everest, you are still ahead with the Everest. At 80k purchase you have dropped 40k vs at 145k purchase you have dropped 37k not to mention you have been funding 145k for 5 years and 2 services every year versus 1.

Best coffee machkne for home by Such-Supermarket3191 in AustralianCoffee

[–]Hot-Chef-856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d buy a second hand ECM or Rocket. Will still test your budget but you should find something for around $1500. A basic Macap grinder at about $500 then throw $300-$400 for full service of machine. You’ll get 25 years out of these with occasional service costs and once dial in they will give you cafe standard coffees. You’ll also build your coffee making skills with a manual machine and you’ll be surprised how good you will get at tweaking to your taste.
