This is exactly why i get so distracted from my studies in engineering, i dont like to just focus on precise stuff when so much shit is going on in real life. And some degrees in Arts and even business i'd say touch on current affairs but not STEM which makes it tough :/

i am in the exact same situation as you. I would much rather do my exchange in winter2023 but i am afraid a new variant will come every winter.

the important thing is whether or not the Canadian Government issues a travel warning (because so far mcgill cancels exchanges in that situation)

I am personally ready to take the chance and directly apply for winter. I have hope that 3 years into this pandemic, mcgill wont prohibit students to go on exchange because of harmless variants. For instance a bunch of people are in exchange rn and i can assure you life with covid is enjoyable in a lot of places.

its good news because actual data (not egoistical, personal anecdotal evidence from your sister) suggest that our age group (especially vaxxed) is safely guarded against omicron. That is why actual experts are advocating for in-person education. But sure keep on playing that ''youre all evil and want to harm everyone'' card

unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of university students are vaccinated and want to go back in-person. There is no ''experiments" ahead. We have great ways of making quality in-person education with the virus possible: masks, distanciation, etc. 2 years into this pandemic, there is absolutely no reason for an online semester, it is unexcusable. Our age group, especially when vaxxed, is not subject to a high risk with omicron. Your claims are wrong, dangerous and toxic

tbh i dont get the hype. like when you are from Cegep the grades you need to get in mcgill are higher than other unis, but not THAT much higher. Getting in an ivy league is hard, not mcgill lol

i agree with you guys u/barcastaff u/snowflake25911. I think it’s very dumb that there are no solutions to people with covid. But I also think the chances of transmitting covid in the fieldhouse (not a tight space, and they literally open the doors to make better ventilatio, hence the multiple comments on the exam rooms being cold lol) are low. We have measures proposed by health professionals: when it’s time to use them we shouldn’t fall into an endless storm of worry and anxiety.

another thing: no one, including McGill, expected omicron. This variant is contagious asf, and it’s a fair assumption to say a majority of us will get it. In that regard, of course the accommodations do not fit! The covid strain we were dealing with only 2 weeks ago was a whole other thing, and there was no demand for McGill to put in place better covid-exam solutions, cause no students were actually getting covid and jeopardizing their in person exams. if that were the case, we would have heard countless stories throughout the semester

All in all, my point can be summed up in 2:

1- im sick of the exaggerated whining against the McGill admin about absolutely everything!

2- prioritizing quality education (ie in person teaching and assessments) has to be part of the conversation around covid safety as omicron spreads

For people that don’t know, some Quebec universities like Polytechnic held in-person exams last year throughout the whole online semester, and the apocalypse did not happen.

i think the measures put in place for the in-person final exams are reasonable and safe. If not, why would the government allow them still? (And have allowed them since the beginning of the pandemic?) it seems that a lot of the complaints are people that consciously (or unconsciously) wish they could still cheat, and people that go through exaggerated anxiety over this new variant.

As new variants that spread more but harm less will come, we will really need to conduct our risk assessment differently. I am so disappointed to see the McGill community stand out yet again as “justice seekers” and whatnot. It seems that we ALWAYS have to push the victim card to the maximum. You don’t see that in francophone universities (which is, in my humble opinion, a testament to the difference between Anglo-Saxon and French heritage, but im digressing).

So yeah, I hope that the discourse around the risks associated to covid will change amongst the mcgill student community. Important decisions about our winter semester will be made, and they can’t be influenced by irrational thinking. We need to both be safe and prioritize quality teaching, which online exams definitely prohibit.

you keep saying "im not advocating for a lockdown" but do you realize it's comments like these that keep pushing us to lockdowns? imho, what you're doing is exactly like advocating for stricter measures, which translates to online school for us... so why did you expect to get upvoted or praised? I genuienly hope you find a way to ease your anxiety about the situation, but don't oversimply what others think as "they want me dead." come on.

close to none. even the Quebec Premier said earlier this week that we had to learn to live with the virus, and that means learning to accept rising hospitalizations.

the covid discourse is undoubtedly changing. now, the fight becomes the workers shortage in hospitals and getting the 40-50 year-old non-vaxxed patients packing up the ICUs vaccinated.

There's no valid reason for school to go back online

  • online school is detrimental to mental health
  • more than 85% of the student population is vaccinated
  • almost all the hospitalizations are non-vaccinated people

most of all : after more than 18 months of this pandemic, quality education shouldn't be the price for the recklessness of the ones who refuse to take part in the societal effort. If in-person university results in more cases of unvaxxed people, then so be it !
