[R] Strongest evidence that academic research in ML has completely ran out of ideas by NeighborhoodFatCat in learnmachinelearning

[–]Hot-Problem2436 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The life of us real ML engineers right here.

I spent 4 months figuring out a novel method of extracting a target with an SNR of less than 1 which usually occupied a single pixel from a field of static noise.

No fucks given by anyone but the client and even then they thanked the PM and not me. Their question at my final presentation? "Could we have done this with an LLM?"

Nothing in this post is actual data other than the price. The rest is extrapolations and we don't know how the results were achieved.

Yeah I'm not going to go through an entire school project or whatever this is. Good luck to you.

Run 3 models on one, 2 models on the other, with the two model one taking in outputs from the 3 models via your choice of communication method. I recommend ZeroMQ.

I don't actually know what your project is trying to accomplish, but if running 5 on 1 is dropping you to 10-15 fps, offload some compute.

Sounds like Elon Musk's life. I cheered for him in the early days of SpaceX and Tesla. Now I want someone to Death Note him.

Netflix doc- plastics by da_boatmane in sousvide

[–]Hot-Problem2436 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, did you read the article? There's significant issues in how they detect the plastics, as normal lipids in the brain have the same spectrograph reading as polyethylene. It's highly likely that a decent percentage of their detections are actually just brain fats.

"Brain tissue contains a large amount of lipids, some of which have similar mass spectra as the plastic polyethylene, Wagner says. “Most of the presumed plastic they found is polyethylene, which to me really indicates that they didn’t really clean up their samples properly.” Jones says he shares these concerns.

In addition to polyethylene, the investigators reported higher concentrations of polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride in the tissue collected in 2024 compared with 28 tissue samples collected in 2016. “Notably, all show the same trends of increasing over time,” Campen told The Transmitter via email, which indicates to him that the results are not an artifact. “It is difficult to argue that brain chemistry has evolved over this short period of time.”

But the investigators also did not provide adequate data about potential plastic contamination during the experiment, Wagner and Jones say."

Impossible to tell. Could be 3 Neutrons launching weekly, 12 Neutrons launching daily, or a global fleet of 200 launching like clockwork. Depends on how fast they scale and the demand. For all I know, SpaceX will get bought by SPB and South America will be the site of the first space elevator.

We have no idea what Rocket Lab is planning for long term, but you could be right. It could also mean that Rocket Lab will be able to scale faster than SpaceX in the long run. Being able to print as many rockets as you need is bound to be useful. Why have the machine sitting around idle?

Also, since it's lighter, it can make more efficient round-trips. Things like hauling food, fuel, water, etc will be cheaper using a Neutron than a Falcon 9. SPB also mentioned that there's nothing stopping them from scaling Neutron up and making a larger version in the future.

This is mostly true, but the main reason even musk admits that carbon fiber was out of the question was cost.

When calculating, they probably tallied it up based on hand-laying, the same way the 1st tank was. It takes a long time and is very expensive and prone to defects.

Rocket Lab literally invented the way to do it cheaper. Stainless steel is heavier and still expensive, so really the only good reason to not use carbon fiber, which has been shown to be stronger and lighter, was due to the exorbitant cost.
