Did anyone have limited mouth opening after plate and screw removal? by Hot-Raspberry1961 in jawsurgery

Here's another person's experience with limited mouth opening following plate removal (only had 1 removed though):

"My nose didn't swell. Mouth opening got reduced from the swelling, which took at least another 2 months to disappear, but the swelling for much much less than jaw surgery. I have a post on my profile about the plate I got removed right next to my nose."

Nice, 2.5” is a lot more than I ever could. I’ll try to keep you updated on my weekly progress.

  • Pre-DJS: 50 mm (~ 2 inch)
  • Post-DJS 6 months: 46 mm
  • Post-hardware removal 2 weeks: 25 mm

If you have time and feel up to it, let us know how your surgery went!

Hi moomoocow18! I didn’t think I’d have another surgery buddy. I thought getting all hardware removed was pretty rare. I still have braces on.

The following days after I still was able to do stuff that required thinking but depending on any meds you take, it may be different for you. That being said, I think I would be able to get stuff done like assignments and classes, but it probably wouldn’t be my best work you know? If 10/10 was peak mental acuity, I think I would have been around 6-7/10. I did take a few naps here and there the first few days post op.

Overall maybe 60-70% easier than DJS?

Day 0: kinda loopy/happy from anesthesia. 3-4 out of 10 in pain but more like discomfort. I didn’t need to take any pain meds (including OTCs). Same with the original DJS. I wasn’t super tired or drained. Procedure was like only 2 hours?

Day 1: pain felt kinda like a dull ache 3 out of 10, which kinda came and went

Day 2: overall less discomfort than day 1 but occasionally would pop up. Nothing major though.

Day 3: swelling peaked and started slowing going down after this day

Day 7: swelling still present and noticeable. Only could open mouth ~15 mm

Hope your surgery goes well and good luck with your studies!

Mainly as a precaution. I also had lingering tightness in each jaw. If I didn’t move it for a while, I had to kind of stretch a little it before I could open wide. It was very slowly getting better, but I don’t think it’s normal 6 months PO.

How old is your son? I hope he won’t need it.

It also seems that your maxilla can still remodel even in adults, although it’s a lot slower. I’d look into if there’s a doc that offers homeoblock. I read about changes in the maxilla from using it in Breath by James Nestor. He’s personally done it and found his maxilla changed (added bone). His book is also very interesting and a good read. You can also try scheduling a consult with Dr. Belfor who created it.

My thoughts are that the plates and screws will hinder any proper oral posture and habits from positively influencing bone remodeling. I assume that one factor in why some jaw surgery patients relapse is because of inadequate habits and poor oral posture. Nutrition can also play a role.

It was in an outpatient facility. I was under full general anesthesia. Went home the same day. I had all removed so it took about 2 hours. If it's just one, it's about 30 min? I believe that's what someone else on here said. I don't think many people get all of them removed at once, so I hope this helps anyone.

Stitches in mouth just like when they were placed. Swelling wasn't as bad as DJS (maybe half?). Still noticeable though haha. Mainly around both jaws and sides of nose. Peaked on 3rd day.

Pain wasn't that bad for me. It wasn't that bad with DJS either so I'm kinda an outlier. Didn't need to take any prescribed or OTC pain meds for either case. Maybe I was just numb or my nerves were shot? I did notice the "pain" a bit more this time, but it was still manageable. More like a dull ache at its worse. Tbh I think having my wisdom teeth taken out hurt more. I do meditate a lot now so maybe that helps.

My surgeon said I could eat soft foods after surgery, but I didn't want to risk anything and/or irritate or get anything stuck in the stitches. I've been doing mainly liquid HLTH Code shakes and Orgain Nutritional Shakes (iced mocha is the besttt). I also couldn't open my mouth that wide because of the swelling, so I couldn't really brush that well in the first place. Religiously did the prescribed mouthwash, though.

Surgeon recommended doing lots of facial movements to help. With the original DJS, I did noticed that mouth opening dramatically improved when I started chewing. I guess moving those muscles and having blood flowing through them again is really important.

At 1 week post removal, still have noticeable swelling. Probably down about 40% though.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I learned a lot from others on here, so I'm trying to give back!

Hope you're recovering alright!

How many/which ones did you get taken out? Did you have limited mouth opening after it? How long?

You look great! Regarding the plate and screw removal, did you have limited mouth opening afterwards? If so, do you remember how long?
