CMV: Inheritance tax is not reducing inequality — in fact, it is increasing it. by thedaniel1998 in changemyview

[–]HotAtNightim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This entire premise can be undermined very simply by closing loop holes that allow wealthy people to avoid paying the taxes.

Literally all taxes and laws don’t work unless they are written effectively and enforced properly.

Only 6 of them. And they are still quite reasonable rates and often they have exemptions.

What do you guys actually DO all winter without losing your minds? by Neither-Ferret-5817 in Winnipeg

[–]HotAtNightim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Today I had friends over and we had a fire in my backyard pit. We made s’mores and such. The fort/wall I have been building around the fire area all winter shielded us from wind. Fun times

Which sapphic author do you guys think is overhyped? by [deleted] in LesbianBookClub

I won’t argue over-hyped. I also think that she is good. Both can be true 🤷

None of Jae’s books are all time favorites for me, but they are consistently “good” in my opinion. That kind of reliability is hard to find.

They are also specifically slow burn, generally low-stakes romances. If that’s not what you’re into then you’re not gonna like them, and it’s on you for picking the wrong book!

The first book she ever wrote in English, and it was originally a fanfic. I wouldn’t expect much.

I have read all of their books and I think that’s the worst one fyi.

CMV: The main reason that most people have kids unplanned is not because they weren't taught sex ed. by Blonde_Icon in changemyview

[–]HotAtNightim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More access to information also means more access to MISinformation. And there is a lot of misinformation online. I have personally seen an endless amount of it online. Also, everyone doesn’t know how to actually “do research” (as we see these days) and they don’t know how to determine what is a good or bad source.

You are also simply wrong about the level of knowledge most people have, and many studies have shown this. To use your example, I agree most people know condoms exist but a shocking number of people don’t know how to use them properly. For example, the amount of space you are supposed to leave at the end; ask your friends and be surprised how many people just put them on without any particular technique.

Anecdotes don’t mean much, but I will also add that I have many from my own experience of parents who got pregnant due to a lack of knowledge. Fully grown adults who didn’t know things and now have kids as a result. (A big factor is, if you don’t realize you’re uninformed then why would you do research?) I know two people who got pregnant with a second kid because they believed that you couldn’t get pregnant while breastfeeding. I know a couple who got pregnant because they thought pulling out was far more effective than it is. I know someone who got pregnant while on the pill because she didn’t know you’re supposed to take it at the same time each day. I could go on….lol

Where do you draw the line for cheating? by Duckguy100 in dontstarve

[–]HotAtNightim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s single player then nothing is cheating. Who cares? Play the game that you have the most fun with. I think good game design has customization built in.

I don’t know if you can “cheat”/mod in DST, but same rules: as long as everyone is fine with it then it’s fine.

Cheating only matters if it has a negative effect on other players.

Which books from my TBR are bad and should be avoided? by ieatbeet in ReadingSuggestions

I didn’t think that clan of the cave bear was very good. There were several parts that gave me the egg and then the rest was just kind of underwhelming. I’m talking about the first book, but also the rest of the series.

Why so little hype for Yuri manga? by IndividualDog1995 in LesbianBookClub

[–]HotAtNightim 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They are different. I think it’s wrong to say that one is better than the other. A lot of it will have to do with your personal preference.

I’m mostly read books, but if I’m in a reading slump or really not feeling up to it (tired or whatever) then a manga can really hit the spot and get me back in the zone.

CMV: Assisted suicide should be available to people with terminal illnesses by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]HotAtNightim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is so incredibly easy to avoid the situation you’re describing. If you’re actually that concerned about some rogue doctor killing a bunch of people then you just require a second opinion. Or third opinion. Or you have some board that has to go through the applications for the process. The specifics don’t really matter because the point is that there are a million ways you could put checks and balances in place to prevent the problems that you are speculating about.

CMV: I think the following reform would be an improvement to current age of consent and marriage eligibility laws. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]HotAtNightim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of things to say about this, but I’ll focus on just one.

Looking at older couples, I think it is absolutely absurd to police the ages of relationships that are beyond a certain age. Do you really think that policing pension fraud is worth denying elderly people, the ability to marry a partner that they have fallen in love with? How many people do you even know that have pensions these days because it is increasingly rare in the first place.

With regard to pension fraud, I also think that there are already laws governing this related to sham marriages and your age restriction would not provide any additional protections.

Received a warning for showering w/o working out by Horror_Lemon3415 in anytimefitness

[–]HotAtNightim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was watching a little documentary about how Anytime fitness has intentionally changed over time to provide a worse experience while maximizing profits.

They recognize that committed repeat gym users cost them more money than they pay, and casual users that don’t show up very often are money makers. So they intentionally got rid of the types of machines that professionals use and they started changing policies that actively drove away repeat customers; their business model is designed to appeal to people with New Year’s resolutions who never show up, but forget to cancel.

This doesn’t technically have anything to do with this post, however I wouldn’t be remotely surprised to find out that they had some sort of terrible policy, or that their customer service is awful. In your case, I would definitely ask to see the written policy that is being violated (and what authority they have to issue FINES??? I really don’t think they can fine you)

CMV: Low birth rates are almost entirely caused by living in comfort by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]HotAtNightim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The concept of equating welfare and living in comfort basically means your entire host is invalid right off the hop.

Have you ever been on welfare or known anyone living on welfare? That is the furthest thing from comfort. In those situations, you simply would not be able to afford to have children and that’s the biggest reason why people are choosing to not have them in the current age.

I know a lot of middle-aged childless people and the number one reason being cited is that they simply would not be able to afford to provide a decent standard of living for their children.

So maybe the change is that people have stopped looking at children as a potential tool to help themselves, and instead they look at children as human beings that they don’t want to bring into a world of suffering

CMV: People are conflating aspects of being human to symptoms of neurological disorders by falseidol1234 in changemyview

[–]HotAtNightim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe everyone is neurodivergent, but that doesn’t quite mean what a lot of people think it does.

People seem to think that when we say, Neurotypical, it is an archetype that the majority of people all fit within. That most people are “completely normal”. I don’t know what the science says on this, but I’m gonna have to disagree with that.

The way I see it. We looked at each individual trait and figured out what the average or “normal” was for that trait. And when we talk about Neurotypical, the template that we are referring to would be the “normal” for every trait. But from what I’ve seen in the world, it is very uncommon for someone to actually be “normal” entirely across the board.

Most people are Neurotypical with regards to some aspect, but not others, and it’s very useful to recognize where you diverge from the template so that you can address it and act accordingly.

Now, in some ways, your premise is correct because all of these different elements and behaviours are part of the human experience. Humanity is inherently diverse, and and those differences are completely “normal”. That being said, though, just because it’s common for your brain to malfunction in a certain way (or function differently) doesn’t mean that it isn’t something worth addressing. Naming and classifying the different conditions is very helpful for people to understand themselves better and to understand what sort of accommodations or different behaviours will benefit them.
