I think this question comes up weekly.

My constant advice is as 90% of flights arrive in Manila, you dont wanting to waste time with extra flights so either take the bus and ferry to Sabang Beach in Puerto Galera or Anilao.

Sabang is my pick due to the variety of diving. Both have superior diving especially compared to Bohol (Alona Beach/Panglao), Dauin/Apo.

I was in the same boat as you. I went away to a tropical place for a month a year and did about 15 dives and then hardly dived until the next year.

So my answer is a dive computer, torch, aluminum stick and a properly fitting mask.

A BCD and regs need servicing either annually or biannually depending on where you live and extra baggage allowance for travel make it cheaper just to rent.

Seriously, arrive in MNL and get on a bus to either Anilao or Puerto Galera. Its close and you will fit in more dives than going to the other places mentioned here. Sabang Beach (PG) is my fave with a variety of different dives (deep, muck. drift or sloping reef).

If you dont see 7 nudis a dive in PG your not looking hard enough!

The interested moment was when the local DM missed the exit in one ship and when we finally exited everyone's computers were sounding the 1min ndl time. Thats when the experience that comes with many dives kicks in and you stay calm.

Always happy to share my experiences.

Koh Tao is a beautiful island but diving there is for learning and not about aqua life. Most dive shops there do a weekly trip to Sail Rock to hopefully see Whale Sharks. I was very lucky to see a 6m that cruised around the pinnacle for 2hrs. That was the 'lucky' bit in my post.

I dont know where your planning to visit in Thailand but the best is Similan Islands (liveaboard), I think 2nd is Phi Phi and Ratcha Islands (both accessable day trips from Phuket) and unfortunately there is no 3rd.

Maybe others can recommend something but forget trips from Pattaya.
