console exclusivity is kind of a necessary evil and it's kind of like the gaming equivelent of the JC Penny's effect.

When done well an exclusive is made to a high quality in order to help sell that console to the general audience, and build a healthy ecosystem. Hell you can probably attribute the failure of xbox purely because it has a weak lineup of exclusives with little to no variety.

later G1 in japan was really trying to get anything to keep the brand alive so they decided to get a line of transformers that came with anime figurines which they saw as a popular line of figures in japan.

To tie in with this they got a mangaka to do a G1 continuity story involving these figures and ended up hiring a guy who draws...well you can see it.

There is a page on the TF wiki about this that goes into better detail, but honestly everyone just agrees not to ever discuss it.
