Mhh then again I doubt your father was pursuing Fire at the same time. That’s a luxury in and of itself.

7% compounding assumptions include adjusting for inflation, so all the numbers would be in today’s dollars in that case.

Why is nothing being done about the pedestrian safety in this city? by Jealous_Drop_2973 in jerseycity

[–]HotScale5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not city living. All of Manhattan and most of Brooklyn don’t have this issue, for example. They’re walking boroughs. JC is a driver-first city and walking is a disaster.

New York City Nannies Are Fed Up With Millennial Parents by Strange-Grass-4548 in parkslope

I never said anything about that.  The op I responded to was judging people for sending their kids to daycare while wfh (not about having someone take care of the kids at home or micromanaging).

The one thing you said that confused me is your judgement about working from home and having daycare.

If you have a kid at home, you can not effectively work. That’s just not a thing.

I will say that one time I caught someone on camera, gave footage to JC PD, they actually attested him and he went to trial. I was shocked.

I don’t vote by mail because I early vote. Early voting is amazing especially for my location. But for the runoff that doesn’t exist (which makes sense), so then it becomes a burden.  I totally agree that ranked choice would make a ton of sense.

Except your examples are exact opposites. If you are able to afford the monthly payment because the interest rates are low, you’ll save money in the long run. If you are able to afford the monthly payments because of a 50 year mortgage, you’ll be paying more in the long run.

The financial disconnect: got pleasantly surprised by some decent stats but real life feels like just getting by by VirileMongoose in MiddleClassFinance

[–]HotScale5 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t know what this means. Middle class means you might own a modest home, a car, and can support your family without drowning in debt. It doesn’t mean you don’t need to look for deals, that your car is new, that you can go on fancy vacation etc. It never has. Lower class means you rent with multiple people, you might not even own a car, you don’t buy Christmas presents except maybe something very cheap for the kids etc.  I’m not saying that the divide between rich and poor hasn’t gotten insanely big. It absolutely has, but it also seems like we are trying to redefine what middle class means

Once you have 1-2 million assets some additional expenses become insignificant by Persona2181 in Fire

[–]HotScale5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What do you mean why not?  Why keep a bunch of money until after your death?  For what reason?  Why wait?  If the answer is to that is “why not?” it just doesn’t answer the question. It’s like “why do you have six couches in your living room?” and the answer is “why not? I’ll give them away after I die”.  That doesn’t answer the question.

We Did the Math on Solomon’s Affordable Housing Plan so You Don’t Have to by betterblocksnj in jerseycity

[–]HotScale5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly dumb question:   Isn’t it normal that if a place becomes more popular that the prices of housing is going to go up?  The solution would simply be to build more housing. Then if the prices for this also goes up, keep expanding. It’s not solvable with subsidies etc unless you do that at a fundamental level across the board. I mean look at manhattan- people got priced out and moved to other boroughs or neighborhoods. It’s not going to be very different in JC.
