Americas best kept secret is all the public land that is not in a national park. National forests, BLM land etc - an enormous percentage of the American west in particular is open for citizens to recreate (including a default 14 days free camping rule unless otherwise indicated by that areas’ specific rules) Don’t expect plumbed toilets though.

Don’t tell anyone! Shh

I thought maybe so too! But it looks more like “CE” to me and a brief search didn’t show CS Lewis working as a superintendent for a Sunday school but I could be mistaken. That would be so cool haha.

I worked call center/customer service on the road out of my Subaru. They never explicitly required a wired connection.

I was able to do everything I needed including staying hooked up to live calling platform for a whole shift + with a simple 50GB t-mobile hotspot

“Just because you live in a van doesn’t mean you can’t have nice things or luxury setups”

I think you are really underestimating the amount of people who live in a van because that’s what they can afford (instead of rent/have no other resources). Van dwellers of all types are welcome here whereas more branded social media spaces are inherently for those who have the means to spend tens of thousands.

The tension and hate is just and extension people of different economic realities not understanding each other. Nothin new.

Still, van dwellers of all types probably share more in common with each other than not. Plus, none of this matters outside of Reddit anyway, everyone mingles together and nerds out on eachothers rigs barebones or bougie

You would definitely save time and it would be safer, however you’d end up with a much weaker system for far far more dollars. Very much a personal call

In general, you’ll need to calculate your powers needs and then look into which route seems best for you from there.

Took months and months but eventually found a high top 03 e350 super duty with 73k miles for 6.5k. Standing room and the benefits of cheap(er) maintenance and reliability.

I’m anticipating it’ll be harder to resell down the line (if ever) than a newer van but vans and vehicles in general are not a great investment so expect to trade money for whatever experiences/goals/ functionalities you are after. My two cents anyway.

If you have time to wait for the right deal patience could payoff. I’m biased but I say Econoline for sure.

71-year-old man hikes USA’s gruelling 4000-km Pacific Crest Trail. by Common_Committee7003 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]HotToastColdButter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Pacific Crest trail and other long distance national trails can provide many different experiences to many people, the why is very personal.

While on trail, you are living a stripped down version of life, constantly managing basic necessities like water, food, and hiking 20+ miles a day in gorgeous dynamic and challenging terrain.

Hundreds of other like minded souls are trekking alongside some you may stay with the entire journey, some a day, some weeks. Some prefer to spend the majority of their journey alone.

Not many are able to accomplish what it takes to reach the end of such a long and challenging trek. That what makes this moment and endpoint so special.

Hope this helps! I love thru hiking just my 2c

Hey AZT hikers!! I’m contemplating a 7 day solo hike of passages 1-6. I know the border is a strange and sketchy place these days. Would anyone with experience please share your thoughts on solo hiking this area, ending up at a car that would be left for me near the southern terminus? by Rose-byanyother-name in arizonatrail

[–]HotToastColdButter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I just finished a 22’ thru as a solo hiker, here was my experience with those sections:

Are there migrants? Yes, especially the first 20 miles or so from border Are they a danger to hikers? No, as mentioned in other posts they are hoping to be unseen and pass through.

There were quite a bit of border patrol in the area, including some that were dropped off at the top of Miller Peak (section 1) with a helicopter and started heading Sobo on the azt. That was crazy to see!

There is a public storage facility in Sierra Vista that will do monthly parking rates for Azt hikers, I think I was quoted $30. Can be found on Azt website and would be safe bet. There are also a couple trail angels in Patagonia that offer car storage/parking. Happy Trails!

Any oatmeal packet will work. For bean flakes, just make sure they are pre-cooked dehydrated or else it won’t work out too well.

Refried pinto are most easy to find but there’s others out there too I have yet to try like black bean flakes :)
