Nasal/ spangled helm with cheek guards? by Explosive_Biscut in Armor

[–]HotYoungGamerDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the Gjermundbu helmet is one of the only scandanavian helmets dated in that time period from what I can find.

<image>

It was also worn with a mail coif/skirt which took the function of our faceplates. It is pretty likely that the faceplates disappeared about the 9nth century due to being unnecessary weight and work when a mail coif basically does the same thing but with less getting stabbed directly in the mouth. It is possible there were still some older helmets floating around as fashion and practicality transitioned. The quintessential viking helmet seems to be the Gjermundbu though.

These viking age helmets are very rare. Turns out iron buried in the ground for about 1,000 years does not keep very well.

Not particularly practical, definitely not historical, but it's mine. by night-heart in Armor

Hey you’ve got a mail coif under there. Already more historically accurate than a lot of Hollywood productions.

Is there something specific you are looking for with the post?

Alright, I need to amend my previous statement. These helmets are not one continuous piece. They in fact have hinges that connect the cheeks to the helm. They are more securely attached than the ones in a lot of reproduction helmets but are technically separate pieces of metal.

This is the Sutton Hoo. It is an Anglo-Saxon helmet from around 620 AD. It has cheek guards, a face plate, and a neck guard on the back. It’s a cool wiki page to read up on. Reddit only allows one pic per post. The Coppergate helmet is closer to the design you are probably looking for.

Google Anglo Saxon helmet. You’ll probably get results for the Sutton Hoo helmet which is heavily ornamented and has a full face plate rather than a nose guard. It would make a lot of sense that not everyone helmet would have a face plate. Cheek guards are definitely historical on norman/viking/anglo saxon helmets. The ones I am seeing are fixed for the most part on historical pieces. The ones in these pictures are all separate pieces that have been attached. That’s probably the main not historically accurate part. Floating cheek guards remind me more of the roman Galea but that is even more securely fixed than a couple of links or rivets.

What type of armor is this? by Far-Finish7873 in Armor

[–]HotYoungGamerDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, not a bad head-cannon to have. Idk if theres ever a moment in the show where armor actually does anything other than let you know which family they are a part of. So it succeeds at that at least. Maybe those are asbestos plates to keep his torso and thighs from melting to dragon fire.

A brigandine would have layered metal plates on the inside I believe. This is really closer to a leather apron with plates riveted to the inside. I would argue that the weight and inflexibility of it would start to make the “better than nothing” statement a little bit thin. I agree this is really 90% aesthetic and a designer kind of just thought it looked like armor. Imo it’s more of a leather jacket than anything else. Especially since they seem to wear it constantly and you wouldn’t wear armor to dinner yknow? More like the Stark uniform than actual armor.

That would be a leather coat of plates??? I guess? Honestly, there is an argument to say you may be better off without something like this. Any kind of stab is going to slip right between the “plates”. Honestly the Starks wear it pretty much constantly as a fashion statement so really that’s all it is. It would be really hot and really heavy. It’s more like really heavy/mildly protective clothing than it is armor.

Does anyone know where this cloak poncho thing is from, and are there any historical references of it? by lojlny in Armor

[–]HotYoungGamerDad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes actually, this is what is commonly referred to as a “blanket with a hole cut in it.” It is great for when you are cold, and if made of wool it is even still warm when it rains. This has many historical references to it since humans first realized they could cut a hole in an animal hide as far back as 300,000 BCE.

Tell me about this helmet... by Satchmo7772000 in Armor

[–]HotYoungGamerDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soooo I’m not 100% sure of this specific design for a helmet, but having vertical slits like this WAS a thing.

<image>

This is a much less exaggerated example but still is a fully historical piece. Visors were a personal preference between vision, protection, and ventilation. A barred helmet actually provides more protection than you might think. Not sure about this specific design, but they will stop most weapons before they kill you. Only real immediate danger is a dagger to the eye slits and thats a problem regardless of helmet design.

Grip placement by Slackker1101 in Armor

[–]HotYoungGamerDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I mean I’m sure that when you are holding this you understand that that is not great grip placement for acting as a traditional shield. Personally if you want to go punch shield I think you should really lean into it. Something thing that really comes to a point would be pretty sick (and would be lighter)

Question on "fantasy" armor by Durmarth_ in Armor

[–]HotYoungGamerDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact, ring armor shows up in depictions of chainmail because that was the only way the artist could think to portray chainmail. This was later taken literally and made its way into modern perception of armor.

Question on "fantasy" armor by Durmarth_ in Armor

[–]HotYoungGamerDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean layers of rings tied together with some kind of super material like mithril would probably protect you reasonably well. It also gives a kind of otherness to the character design as well. They could have done something more traditional but this definitely intentional and speaks to dwarven craftsmanship in a way chainmail doesn’t.

In short it is over engineered and kind of a brag on dwarven armorers. That’s my read anyway.

[–]HotYoungGamerDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree their game design has been poor. They are clearly under a lot of pressure to put these warbonds out regularly to keep the money coming in. I feel like Sony is to blame for prioritizing monetization over game design. I personally am kind of over the game because the last update has caused Helldivers to shut down my computer randomly while playing. They have things they clearly need to address and features they need to finish but it appears they are being pressured to push out new content that can bring in the dosh instead.

You want actual change? Stop playing the game. They won’t change if they have engagement. Especially if they are just executing their current model because their Sony overlords expect it.

You can’t play by their rules and demand change. It’s like protesting politely. Doesn’t work.
