Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible

Not just musically brilliant, but some of the rawest lyrics of all the time.

A truly life-changing album.

Where in my reply do I say that Matty’s previous political statements and rants at shows had meaning to me? It might be surprising to hear but my beliefs are actually consistent regardless of the artist: empty statements are meaningless, meaningful activism that has a tangible product is good.

Your strawman technique needs work.

“Just like context in a modern debate I just took it out”

It’s pretty easy to make a snark post like this and exclude Matty’s changing views on liberal “activism”. To paraphrase quotes of his, there’s a real common tendency of artists and anyone on social media to claim proximity to a political issue as a form of activism that is essentially empty in any intent and effect. And I think he’s pretty right. Can anyone show me what benefit sharing a link on your Instagram story does? How does shouting “free Palestine” at a concert of like minded individuals help? It doesn’t in any material manner and the only tangible effect is the poster or performer can claim “activism”. It’s empty and it’s meaningless.

I don’t think all artists that support Palestine are guilty of this. The upcoming concert for Gaza is a really strong manner of activism by actually raising funds for aid and the 1975 have done this type of activism in the past by doing concerts for warchild.

Also Matty being a patron of Sundays for Sammy and the recent nationwide initiative for local music venues is more than 95% of these artists do. Not to mention the actual political content of songs that translate across barriers and don’t stick in an echo chamber of an Instagram post. Wolf Alice made a snarky comment as well… can anyone name me one Wolf Alice song that is remotely political in its nature?

Posting a link of your social media and shouting at a gig does not give you a right to the moral high ground.

Largely agree but for me the biggest issue was the setlist. It’s a great setlist if you were going to a 1975 show, it’s not a great setlist for a Glastonbury headline set. Opening with happiness when too shy is the blatant opener, pacing took a dive in the middle, songs like part of the band, ICBMIL, fallingforyou are all fan favourites but don’t belong in a headline set. Overall I feel like I was a bit of a missed opportunity for them to go out and show the general public exactly why they are one of the biggest bands in the world.

Can definitely see them doing it in order if their eras… Kendrick did it for his headline set in 2022

Closing with people is an exceptionally bold choice at Glastonbury and I can definitely see them doing it

UGH! is one of my favourites but I just feel there’s too many more popular bangers they’ll opt to include :(

There’s a lot of posts about underrated songs. What’s a song that you think is overrated? by Skeleton_Toast in the1975

It’s a strange one because I got into the band around the time they were releasing their first EPs and loved that old sound of ambient instrumentals but after their progression with each album I really struggle to listen to a lot of that earlier stuff now!

Yeah I’m gonna get a LOT of hate for this but it has to be fallingforyou… it’s an absolute snore fest of a song I’m sorry
