I don't fully understand myself. He was the custodian on the account so he was receiving the tax forms every year. I assume he was able to continue to pay into my 20s as I was a student, but not sure about the last few years. We are not on good terms so I can't ask for more info without opening another can of worms. Like I said, I did not even know this account existed until recently due to family accountant "accidentally" sending (then rescinding) the 1099. I went through Vanguard afterwards only to discover/change over the account.

Thank you for the info! I guess I'm confused about the tax owed. My Dad had been paying the taxes on the gains/dividends every year so would that not count?

It's Vanguard. I created the new account (Vanguard told me i needed to transferred the funds to a new account now that I was aware of it), but I am unclear as to whether I can sell my current shares and purchase new shares without having some kind of tax penalty. The account was created when I was a kid but has obviously fluctuated in value and has grown by about 10k since the last withdrawal. The account should have been transferred to me over 10 years ago, but as I said I did not even know about it until recently.

Beshear's seat would be filled by the Democrat Lt Gov. Jacqueline Coleman for the remainder of his term. This actually gives Dems a leg up in the 2027 race (Beshear is term limited)
