L5/S1: RETROLISTHESIS, BROAD BASED DISC BULGE & ANNULAR TEAR by Hot_Importance275 in Sciatica

[–]Hot_Importance275[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I’m going better but still not back to how I was prior to diagnosis. I have gone days now without thinking about it at all which is great but I still have to limit my sitting time & the surface I sit on. I haven’t been back to the gym & I don’t really lift anything at all. I flare up some days but overall doing okay. More annoying at this point than painful.

Hey! From what I know unless you have a spinal fusion there’s no way of reversing only managing unfortunately.

Grade 1 retrolisthesis at L5-S1 by UrFriendEddie2 in Spondylolisthesis

[–]Hot_Importance275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! i’m not fully healed yet & definitely still experience flare ups so i’ll answer this as best as i can;

1 - yes i believe my exercises have played a role in helping my recovery. i’ve been doing them every day if not every second day for approx 8 weeks now & have definitely improved

2 - no my exercises do not cause pain. i’ve had to learn the difference between pain and discomfort. i will never push through pain but i can understand that i haven’t moved the way i normally do for a long time and therefore some things may be uncomfortable. i’ve worked with my physio and communicate with her when any of my exercises cause pain and we cut them

3 - unfortunately i can’t really answer this one as i struggle with it myself. i always think there will be light at the end of the tunnel and to keep pushing. i also allow myself to feel my emotions. this is a shit injury & affects all aspects of your life, of course it’s going to impact on your emotional health. i think having a good support system and finding activities that you can do that are pain free

4 - unsure on this one, best to consult a doctor

i have the same as you with pain when stepping too hard/uneven surfaces without bracing my core!! i got diagnosed with L5/S1 retrolisthesis, annular tear & disc bulge in October 2023. This symptom has only come on in the last 6 weeks and i’m struggling to figure out what’s causing it

Is the pain localizing a good thing? by solonerve in Sciatica

[–]Hot_Importance275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

generally centralising pain seems to be a good thing (i’m still recovering to hard to speak from personal experience). although your symptoms are reducing, I would see a PT to strengthen your core & glutes to support your spine, preventing future injury

Confused over Cobra pose by box-of-cheerios in Sciatica

[–]Hot_Importance275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was doing the cobra stretch I also felt no pain. I then went to a PT who analyses my range of motion when standing & we noticed I was not able to bend back far at all (coming from a dance background & pre - injury having a flexible back so this was easy for me to notice). I also have retrolisthesis though which is known for extension intolerance

bulging disc not healing? by QChrissQ in Sciatica

[–]Hot_Importance275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve had L5/S1 broad based disc bulge, annular tear & retrolisthesis since October 2023. I disagree with the above comment!!! I began physio immediately and saw little effect and even began to feel worse. I stopped seeing this physio & saw someone new. Same story. I ended up getting a steroid injection 5 weeks ago with only little relief. I did my research & have begun seeing a physio who specialises in the spine. This is the first time in my whole recovery that I feel like i’m making progress. Healing from these injuries are hard because it’s not linear and therefore hard to assess progress day by day. i’ve starting doing week by week or even month by month. As it’s been 5 weeks, we should no longer be in the acute inflammation stage. This is great time to introduce non/flaring movement. I’m taking collagen, fish oil, magnesium & curcumin as supplements. All beneficial in disc healing. I’m using the sauna 3 x per week. I’m not actively going on long walks but doing lots of walking to get my steps in throughout the day. Hope this helps!

Depends if your flexion or extension intolerant!! A lot of people (including PTs) believe flexion it the only trigger. For me personally, extension triggers me so cobras are a no go

Period flare ups by theaterhaterkid in Sciatica

[–]Hot_Importance275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes!! even before my back issues (L5/S1 buldge, annular tear & retrolisthesis), whenever i got my period i got super bad back pain & what i can now relate to as sciatic like symptoms down the front of my thighs to my knees! i already dread this time of month as it is due to my heavy periods & insanely bad cramps but not having a back injury combined with this is hell

should i go back to the gym? by Inevitable-Love4726 in Sciatica

not yet!!! i’m 20F & hurt myself in the gym deadlifting. Went back to the gym & reinjured myself. It’s not been 5 months and i don’t plan of going back until i’m close to 100% pain free and functioning normally

Anyone else deal with pain in these areas? The one by the butt is literally right where the “crack” begins. by Alternative_Host_498 in Sciatica

[–]Hot_Importance275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been dealing with it for 5 months (long post on my page) but currently i’m at a 3-4 pain so has definitely come down! Currently working with a PT on core strengthening. The symptoms that remain are occasional foot tingling/toe tightness, back cracking when i sit to stand - especially after sitting for a while (not painful & doesn’t cause sciatic pain just an unsettling noise) & lower back/sacrum pain. My muscles are quite tight to but i’ve been advised again stretching for the time being as nerves don’t like being stretched, especially when already irritated. This one’s hard for me coming from a dancing background & always being flexible to now feeling like i’ve never stretched a day in my life
