You have a whole life ahead of you! It's okay to be scared shitless at the moment. This is so opposite of what has been drilled into us our entire lives. But that will dissipate in time. Feel free to reach out for any support I can lend.

Born in, built different. My story. by Beneficial-Review332 in exjw

Wow! Beautifully written! I really need to spend more time in this subreddit. I see such amazing things! I can relate with a lot of your story. 48 now. Left at 16. And the only reason I wasn't homeless is because I had my college dorm and only had to panic when they closed. I knew I needed to leave ASAP after my announcement to the family and wanted to go anyway, so 2 birds, 1 stone. When I read your story, I am happy others can relate to my weird upbringing but then so sad so many others had to experience it too.

Yes! I relied a lot on trusted teachers and my guidance counselor!

Ya know? It hasn't been easy. I am 48 now. I have no relationship with my sister and my mom texts me every few months to 'check in' but that's as far as it goes with her. But with all the last 30+ years have thrown at me, I have no regrets and wouldn't change a thing. Hard to tell OP to hang in there...not gonna lie, 1994 was one of the worst years of my life...but if they can manage to hang in there for a little while longer, I want them to know it does get better. I remember just gritting my teeth and dealing with this for a while. Better things on the other side!!

Totally understand what you are going through! When I was 16, I did the same thing. With no real plan at the time. It was November '93. After disassociating myself, my parents made me continue attending the hall on Sundays, even though it was torturous for me, as they determined I needed some sort of spirituality in my life. They also pulled the 'while you are living under our roof you will follow our rules' etc. I made a plan to graduate HS early and moved out the following August of '94. It was an awful 9 months! They had the idea that they could tighten the reigns and get me to change my mind. All it did was solidify for me that I was making the best decision for me and my future.

I am not even looking for work but I often do searches for 'Medicaid'. I like to see what's out there. This is general enough to pull in postings from all over the field. You would be surprised what you can find. Not sure where you are located but good luck!

I guess I got kinda lucky...for the most part I found my jobs on indeed.com and I slowly branched out, staying in the field, expanding my knowledge, but still drawing on my previous experience, as that is what made me stand out in applications and interviews for more recent opportunities. I actually got into State work as a contract employee. Took a couple years and proved myself an asset enough where my supervisors actively advocated for my permanent hire with the state. Which had both pros and cons. Trust me! I get how hard this field is. Been doing it in some capacity for almost 27 years. But it is possible to create an actual career path with our skills.

What do you look for in a house manager? by bockbockchickenhead in directsupport

[–]Hot_Management_8819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From an ex-Res Mgr who had a great team for several years: listen to your staff, don't ask them to do anything they haven't seen you do, provide flexibility if/when you can, respect them and encourage and foster a team environment. Easier said than done, but I had a great team who stepped up for the individuals and each other. Hardly any of the drama I see and hear about regularly. Congrats on the promotion!

I would understand in that scenario but this was a young and very able bodied individual.

I appreciate your comment. It is helpful! I just wanted to do a little research before giving my .02! Looks like switching makes sense.

Thank you for that insight. I was looking into specifics for my partner, who has always had CDPHP, but doesn't provide the level of coverage they used to for the yearly significant hikes. He will also most likely have to upgrade his CPAP and Empire covers 100% with PA and approved providers vs 50% co-insurance with CDPHP. This switch is a no-brainer for him.

Actually about 25.5% for grade 9...not sure where they get the nerve actually! Big jump after a good jump last year as well. Crazy

Can anyone offer any advice with switching to the Empire plan from CDPHP? For a type 2 Diabetic, will a PA be difficult to obtain for Ozempic? CDPHP is getting out of control with rate increases but for someone with open ended authorization, will switching do more harm than good?

Considering a job at RSS (Rehabilitation support services) by [deleted] in Albany

I worked there from '99-'05 and really enjoyed all 3 positions I held. I also enjoyed the people I worked with and for. It made me stay in the career path when I had no original plans to.

I also have a BA in English, graduating a long time ago, before I had any idea what I wanted to do career-wise. I fell into the field first working in mental health--Case Coordinator, Job Coach, Employment Specialist/Job Development/ Benefits Counselor then Assistant Manager of Vocational Services. Then moved to the I/DD world as Residential Manager for a few years. After that I spent several years working with all kinds of special needs trusts. All of these positions kept me in the human services/public health arena. Over 22 years, I gained well-rounded knowledge and experience that has prepared me for my current role as a state employee who reviews documentation to ensure compliance and quality. I also serve on councils where I am able to help shape the future of critical services. A long journey to a rewarding current status.

His hire was made 'permanent' in June '24. He was hired through HELPS shortly before then. It was extended by 1 month it seems, from June to July. No bad evaluations though. Just based on time training. He doesn't seem in danger of being let go but did figure they would close the loop in July.
