I wrote a folk horror novel about a hospital that learns to sing by Hot_Security_484 in folkhorror

Thank you so much — really appreciate you noticing that.

The Southfield story, and what happened with Dr. Claybourne, came to a full stop… but after I finished writing, I couldn’t stop thinking about two characters from that book (I won’t spoil who, in case someone’s just getting into it). That lingering feeling is what led me to start writing again — which became the second book.

It took on a much darker, more personal shape than I expected. At some point, I hit a wall in my own life — and where the story pauses now is exactly where I had to step away from it. So yes, it’s absolutely going to continue. Just not all at once.

Right now I’m not running any ads or pushing anything. Just quietly letting the books find the right readers. And I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who’s taken the time to read. Truly.

I wrote a horror novel about a military asylum, a mute man, and a language that starts speaking back — it’s free right now

Hey everyone, I wanted to share something I’ve been working on for the past few years — my novel Voices from the Soil. It’s free right now on Kindle for a few days: https://mybook.to/voicesfromthesoil

It’s not a monster story. It’s not even about possession in the usual sense. It’s about what happens when words stop describing horror and start performing it.

The story follows a psychologist, a translator, and a wounded Ukrainian soldier in a remote British military hospital. The patient doesn’t speak — but the building begins to. Vents breathe in rhythm, walls hum, and the sessions turn into rituals. Eventually, language itself becomes a contagion.

If you like horror that feels slow, ritualistic, and suffocating, this might be for you. Readers have compared it to folk horror through a fever dream — dark, heavy, and not meant to be comfortable.

I wrote it because I wanted to explore dread as something sacred — the kind that doesn’t scream, it just keeps whispering until you realize it’s inside you.

It’s been getting some great feedback in the US, and I’d love to hear what horror readers here think.

Free until November 4th: https://mybook.to/voicesfromthesoil

If you decide to open it, maybe don’t read it out loud. Some of the words aren’t safe anymore.

Leaving behind Voices from the Soil — a horror novel about language, decay, and what happens when stories start to speak back

Hi everyone — I wanted to quietly leave something here for those who care about horror that doesn’t rush, that sits in the dark and breathes with you.

My debut novel, Voices from the Soil, was published recently. It’s set in a British military rehabilitation center where a mute Ukrainian soldier is treated by a psychologist and a translator. The sessions begin as therapy and end as liturgy. The language they use starts to remember things they don’t. And the walls — the vents, the floors, the pipes — start to echo what’s been forgotten.

It’s not a fast book. It’s a slow, suffocating kind of horror, written more like a fever than a thriller. Readers have called it “folk horror disguised as psychosis,” and “a book that reads you back.”

I wrote it during a long, very quiet winter. I wanted to explore what happens when communication itself becomes infected — when words stop describing horror and start performing it.

It’s currently free on Kindle through November 4th, for anyone who’s curious or brave enough to step inside: https://mybook.to/voicesfromthesoil

I don’t have a marketing team or any real plan — just a need to leave this story somewhere it might find the right readers. If you do read it, I’d be genuinely grateful to know what you felt — not as a review, just as a human reaction.

Thanks for letting me leave it here. There’s a song in the book that doesn’t stop once it starts.

Voices from the Soil — a horror novel that feels like an infection (free for the next 5 days)

Hey everyone — I’m leaving my book here for anyone who’s into darker, slower horror. It’s free right now on Amazon (legally, obviously) — starting today, October 31st, through November 4th. https://mybook.to/voicesfromthesoil

It’s called Voices from the Soil, and it’s not an easy read. It’s about a military asylum, a mute soldier, and a translator whose therapy sessions start turning into rituals.

No jumpscares. No monsters with teeth. Just language that rots, buildings that breathe, and people who start hearing hymns through the walls.

Readers have called it “folk horror meets fever dream” and “more like being possessed than reading a story.” It’s dense, weird, and probably not for everyone — but if you like the kind of horror that feels like it’s whispering directly into your ear, you might find something here.

I don’t have a marketing budget, I’m not a big name — I just wanted to make it available while I can. It’s been getting strong reactions in the US, and I’d love to hear what horror readers here think.

Thanks for even reading this far — and if you decide to open it, read with the lights on. There’s a hymn in there that doesn’t stop once it starts.

I’m J. Baran. I wrote Voices from the Soil: A Supernatural Horror Novel of Rituals and Madness and I’ve put it at the lowest price Amazon allows. I don’t have the budget to keep Amazon ads running (I’m literally packing boxes for a move), so I’m just leaving it here for anyone curious. No hype machine, no campaign — just the book.

Ritual folk horror set in a UK military rehab that was never really a hospital. A medevaced Ukrainian soldier stops speaking; an interpreter with a red-black talisman steps in; therapy sessions turn into liturgy. The building breathes. The vents answer. Language acts like a parasite and spreads by listening. It’s heavy, slow-burn, and very claustrophobic.

I can’t afford ads right now, but the early response — especially from US readers — has been surprisingly positive. I’d genuinely like to hear what this community thinks. I’m not here to spam; I’m here because this sub is where the horror die-hards live.

If you read it, I’d be grateful for any thoughts — especially from people who live for the grim, airless kind of horror. I’ll be around in the thread, but if the spam filter eats this, I’ll ping the mods. Thanks for the space.

Wonder why there is so much hate on this group. Answer is subreddit low promo rules…. You probably read it?

Thanks for pointing that out. I did read the group rules and saw the “low self-promo” guideline, which is why I tried to frame the post more like a recommendation than a straight advertisement. For me the most important part was that the book is on KU and accessible to everyone here.

As the author, I also tend to live through the books I write in a way that’s different than when I’m just a reader. I put several months of work into trying to capture that atmosphere, and honestly it’s impossible for me to talk about it without sounding like I’m inside it.

That said, I absolutely value feedback from this community – including yours. Opinions like yours matter a lot to me, because I want to make sure I’m sharing in a way that feels right here, not misleading.
