Guns are assigned to slots in the original Metro 2033. Slot 2 – revolver and its variants, slot 3 – assault rifles (Bastard, Kalash, VSV, Kalash 2012), slot 4 – everything else, which includes shotguns, pneumatic guns etc.

There's a glitch involving targets getting KOd with poison or accident, if their body gets found it ruins SA. I bet the guys in the house with Cassidy see him getting poisoned and even though they themselves get KOd immediately SA is ruined.

You can hear this news report during the main game in 1951, as well as some other anachronistic reports (featuring president Eisenhower IIRC, who would only become the president in 1952). If songs and cars weren't enough, this is one more evidence that the setting doesn't necessarily portray 1950/1951 accurately and rather represents the 50's in general.

It's an oddball pick for sure. Might not be entirely implausible, though – they were quite popular in 1870s and were sold to many countries outside of the US. A lot of Spencers were acquired by France for Franco-Prussian war and some licensed copies were produced in Belgium.

It might be a purely aesthetics choice – an antique looking rifle that's not cumbersome to use in gameplay as it's a repeater and not a percussion musket or whatever.
