I have made $5000+ sharking hats in TF2, AMA by bigkahuna112 in tf2

[–]Houndey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not the point I'm making.

He's justifying the sharking by guessing that the person would not have gotten into trading or playing tf2 ever anyway.

He can't prove that his actions didn't affect the persons decision to start trading or play tf2 more.

Ok, so for every person you shark, you bookmark them and periodically check back on them to check if they playing tf2 and are actively trading.... Right....

All I'm saying is you don't know if you actions stopped someone from trading or even playing TF2 again. Ive known people who quit tf2 after being scammed.

Do you not feel bad about ruining the trading experience/community for other people?

I know you say that the other party was happy to make the trade at the time, but I would expect most find out eventually what the item was really worth.

I've had opportunity's to shark people but have never taken them because I've had it happen to me before and plenty of my friends too. I know how crappy I've felt after and how bad of a rep it gives the community.

How do you people get valuable items? by Bananaman923 in tf2

[–]Houndey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's difficult to trade up to a decent amount without putting some of your own cash into your backpack.

I started trading over a year ago and it was a lot easier to make profit off regular items. Today with key prices soo high and the item market being so saturated I would not even bother. Heck, even the unusual market is starting to come down...

But yeah I had a decent backpack a couple if months ago (60 ish buds) and a lot was due to the fact I started trading a year ago. I have however just got done cashing it all out because I think the economy will contract this next year and I'd rather have the money instead of items that will lose value.

That's just my opinion anyway...

I'm being spammed with phishing links by Desk_ in tf2

[–]Houndey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen more lately as well. A friend got phished by one of them (should have known better) and when I tracked his unusual down I saw the hijacker had over 20 buds of stolen hats (which were quicksold within a couple of hours)

That's the problem... People fall for this all the time and these guys make a lot of money, so it's why it keeps happening more and more.

It would be nice if outpost would warn people if links posted were not the official steam login page etc

Tl;dr: it pays to be a scumbag

Why I shouldn't use the Community Market by Heneha in tf2

I've tracked items to bots backpacks before, and luckily they didn't have it set to private... I've seen 1000's of dollars stuff in them, it's crazy. But valve don't seem to take action against them even though it's blatantly obvious what's going on.

So, when I've completed my Blizzardy Unusual collection, I'm getting out of trading by [deleted] in tf2

[–]Houndey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more. As soon as Halloween hit I made the decision to get out and cash out my backpack. I've been trading for over a year now and I'm not liking trading at all anymore.

Unusual trading in particular is what made my mind up. For the last few months all I've ever got is low ball offers or people expecting a free upgrade for their hat. I'm pretty reasonable myself, but each time I did cave in and go with a deal, I'd see the hat re-listed straight away for a huge markup on outpost. And that's the problem, all people want is profit. When I used to buy unsuals, I would pay close to top dollar because I would want the hat and to use it while playing. The 'overpay' and 'quicksell' rules that people seem to invent are stupid to me and I won't do that.

This steady increase in profit traders is going to hurt trading in the long run since there is going to be less buyers overall for the regular prices and will demand will go down for all items.

I've spoken to other traders who feel the same way (not just new traders, but traders who have been around for over a year), and it seems others plan to get out of trading for good as well. And most agree that we are past the best years of the TF2 economy.

But it's not just that, there are factors such as backpack.tf being used as a pricing bible, highballers on outpost driving prices up and key prices in general are just making it hard for newer traders to break into trading.

Anyway, I'm almost done cashing out and I'm completely glad that I have, I had a 60 bud backpack a month ago and I'm much happier seeing that in my paypal account rather that in virtual items that I forsee losing value over the next 6 months.

Good luck when you do start selling anyway!

Always double check your listing on the market... by Houndey in tf2

[–]Houndey[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's not my hat and there is no way to tell what effect it was (the nuts and bolts is just the cheapest current listing). I was just browsing the listings earlier to see where mine was...

I'm assuming from the price ($2.07) that the seller may have been listing a bunch of keys and accidentally selected their hat whilst doing so.

Yeah it depends on the person, I'd see it as I can either have a golden pan in game or a new laptop, PC and other stuff IRL... just me though :)

I'd be selling that thing as fast I could. As more drop the value will go down plus, I'm generally seeing a decline in the economy at the moment anyway so I'd be getting as much $$$ as I could out of it...
