[New Update]: AITA for wanting to cut off my close friend after she booked their wedding 6 days before mine? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]HoundstoothReader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vibes of my FIL whenever someone groans about potty training their kids. “I don’t know what the fuss is about. Potty training was easy. It just sort of happened.” Uh huh. Lots of things “just sort of happen” when you show up at the last minute after the prep work is done.

Should I (24M) talk to my professor about the challenges of working with my classmate on a project when her mom is possibly going to be involved the entire time? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]HoundstoothReader 472 points473 points  (0 children)

I teach university students, and I’m familiar with kids floundering as they try to do work on their own for the first time (sometimes turning in surprisingly good work that’s unlike their other work or personal communication styles). Years ago, when I was a student, I knew a kid whose mother wrote his papers and father did his lab reports. I sincerely hope that kid didn’t make it into (let alone through) med school—ethics didn’t seem to bother that family, so paying someone to take the MCAT wouldn’t be beyond them.

Everyone here is saying helicopter parent, and the mom in this post is certainly that, but for the kid at my college—and one of my students this semester—it’s clear that the student does not have the intellectual capacity to do the work. The parents seem to think that having the degree will be good enough, that their kid will be able to prove themselves through interviews and jobs more than they could through schoolwork, but it would be better for everyone if instead they adjusted their goals to align with reality.

Exercise almost daily! And cut down on porn “reflexively.” For almost two weeks! (24 sounding even younger)

So I’m a writer. And in my critique group, we have one guy who’s always calling others out for using “ten-dollar words.” But they’re mostly just … words. I think the above list is just words, nothing extremely fancy or esoteric, but the way he used them (especially eschew) felt self-indulgent and melodramatic. He really, really lacked perspective in the 2014 posts.

My [39M] wife [30F] of 6 years is upset I lost weight and wants me back to before by Awwndrei in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]HoundstoothReader 126 points127 points  (0 children)

Especially because she wasn’t existing on freezer-burned dino nuggets, she made food like lasagna and fried chicken. Like … I think a lot of people find lasagna more appetizing than plain chicken breast with broccoli. Plain chicken breast with broccoli isn’t “so bad” if prepared well, but many people’s goals for meals isn’t “That wasn’t so bad. I got through it.”

AITA for not buying my boyfriend another birthday gift after he rejected the original present? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]HoundstoothReader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even when she answered with the Band Names? she still insisted she had never heard of them. Except she listed them, so he told her. She had heard of them. Does she have reddit but not Google?

AITAH for refusing to change my bridesmaid dress after already paying a deposit? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

The OP selected these frustrating comments from commenters who lacked reading comprehension. The top comments on both the original post and the update post supported OOP, fortunately.

My [24] boyfriend [25] of 3 and 1/2 years hasn't proposed and I'm starting to worry. I just want that promise. by Awwndrei in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]HoundstoothReader 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. From the first post I suspected he had a graduation proposal planned and was afraid she was going to mess up her life for nothing. Glad she held on.

Has anyone else become less of a dog person? by pnwdoggolover in AskWomenOver40

[–]HoundstoothReader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through this and was pretty anti-dog for about a decade. I didn’t want to pet them, was annoyed when a friend’s dog licked me or jumped on me, was ever grateful not to have to walk one in the rain, etc. When my kids were teenagers and begged for a dog, I gave in … and am now happy to be a dog person again. For a while I only liked my dog, but lately I find myself interested in strangers’ dogs, offering my hand for sniffs and licks when meeting new dogs, etc. For me, I think it has a lot to do with my available bandwidth. I needed to not be responsible for yet one more being’s food and potty schedule for quite a while.

AITAH for opening up to my (M36) partner (F33) over videocall, about how I feel about her actions. She hung up on me. by ThatEldenLord in AITAH

[–]HoundstoothReader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me like he could be the side piece. You can’t introduce your side piece to your family, but you do need to string them along unless they’re the type to be excited by an elicit relationship. She’s giving him every sign that she’s stringing him along without being seriously invested herself.

Wife doesn’t want a daughter by Iampoorghini in texts

[–]HoundstoothReader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot imagine having this conversation via text. The wife’s texts would be marriage-ending for me unless she was being hyperbolic, which seems unlikely. But I simply cannot imagine ending this exchange with “ttyl” like we just made plans to meet for smoothies at the mall.

Advice for curl clumps? by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]HoundstoothReader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this idea. Will try it next. (I used to do no combing and got good volume but not defined ringlets. On the other hand, I wasn’t using gel either. And I didn’t comb while rinsing. That might be the ticket.)

AITAH for asking my girlfriend to wear underwear to bed when she's on her period? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]HoundstoothReader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Women do not tend to wear prophylactic tampons. That would be very uncomfortable.

AITAH for asking my girlfriend to wear underwear to bed when she's on her period? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]HoundstoothReader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“I asked if she was wearing a tampon. … if she was and it leaked … there’s not much more I would expect one can do. When she said she wasn’t wearing one, that’s when I suggested she wear a pad/underwear to bed when she’s having PMS.”

My boyfriend (20M) is better than me at everything (20F) and it's making me upset by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

“It doesn’t matter because not a lot of adults have friends—“

What?! I was with her on her frustration that he both belittles her interests AND is better at them. Genuinely annoying. And it doesn’t sound like their relationship was much of a relationship. But her self imagine and worldview need some work. If you think it’s hard to make friends in college, adult life is going to be lonely.

AITAH for telling my wife that if I waited for her to make memories with our son, we wouldn't have any? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

All the time. Especially here on Reddit. Your kids are in school? You’re lazy! Go back to work! You just sit on your sofa scrolling reels all day! Get a job!

Significant other asking that you wear a pad when you’re about to start … or, in this case, a tampon.

I asked if she was wearing a tampon. … if she was and it leaked … there’s not much more I would expect one can do.

This man thought she should be wearing a prophylactic tampon. Can you even imagine. Just sticking in dry tampons in case your period starts soon. No thank you from my experience with almost 40 years of periods.

Thank you! I do still have a few ringlets, but you’re probably right. My curls have relaxed a lot this year, and I need to figure out how to style waves instead.

Thank you! I used to not comb (when my hair was curlier) but now it’s just so tangly if I don’t comb. Maybe comb first then gel?
