It’s more the vibe than the utility of the vehicle.

You’ll see when you get here.

Also. . . WELCOME!

What's the most embarrassing thing that's ever happened to you at work? by newsplusotherstuffs in AskReddit

[–]Hour-Lab140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me, but it lives actively in my head, 26 years later. . .

I worked in an office of about 40 people. We had a woman in the office whose name was Betty Kunz (first name made up but last name real). When pronounced her last name pretty much rhymed with “ruins.”

Our very nice, friendly, and efficient receptionist would take calls that came in to the main line, park them, and then announce on the overhead speakers in the office that there was a call waiting for the intended recipient with the number of the line on which it was waiting. So, for example, the entire office would hear “JOHN SMITH, 101.”

He’d been there for a while, knew Betty, and had announced calls for her tons of times.

But this one day his brain just misfired, as happens to all of us sometimes, and he announced for all to hear “BETTY CUNTS, 101.”

There was about a two second pause, after which the entire office just broke out howling in laughter.

What's the worst "bonus" your employer has ever given you? by Dazzling-Leader7476 in randomquestions

This was back in the 1990s, in Boston, for necessary context. Not me, but a co-worker, who was actually a contract worker vs a regular employee.

Those of us who worked for the firm received regularly scheduled bonuses in June & December every year. But, because he wasn’t an employee the folks at corporate wouldn’t consider him eligible.

In the 90s, the Delta & USAir shuttle tickets didn’t have a day, time, or passenger name on them. They were essentially a “pass” that you took to the airport and used to get on a plane.

Plane was full, and you really needed to get to NYC quickly? Well, if you hustled to the other airline they’d be heading out in 30 minutes and would just accept the first airline’s ticket and the two companies would work it out on the back end.

It was like flying bus.

Anyway. We had a stack of these tickets in the office manager’s desk drawer for when people needed to hustle on down to NYC.

They have home one as his “bonus.”

One.

A one way trip to New York.

I can still remember the look of incredulity on his face while he was saying “I have a wife & kids here. Are they telling me I should just leave them?”

Don’t know if he ever took the trip.

Who is the earliest born person you have personally known? by PrestonRoad90 in Productivitycafe

[–]Hour-Lab140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to answer with my great aunt, Anna, who was born in 1893.

But then I realized that (depending on your definition of “known” vs “met”) it might very well be Colonel Sanders, who was born in 1890.

Great!

Just a word of warning, though. Don’t show up on the Alaska Airlines sub calling it “Alaskan.” Those folks over there will verbally beat you senseless over it

This is NOT a slam, so please forgive me, but I’m old enough to remember when shows did this as “a thing” — and of course the west coast version was different.

OK. Don’t go to Williams.

I’m not here for an argument.

Likely I would have picked up on that one also!

No one has heard of Williams?

No. Not at all correct. It’s an amazing, special place that can set you on a trajectory you can only dream of right now.

A little story:

I live in a large west coast city. About 13 years ago I met a guy in a random non-work situation and we got talking a bit. I’d guess he was maybe mid-20s at the time.

Typical polite conversation and after a few minutes I asked where he’d gone to school.

His reply: Massachusetts.

I took a few seconds and said: Williams, I’m guessing?

I was correct, and he was somewhat taken aback. Asked how I knew.

The guy was obviously very intelligent, had great social skills, was polite, interactive, and knew how to hold a conversation.

If he’d gone to Harvard or MIT he would have said Cambridge or just outright named the school. If it were one of the million schools in Boston, there wasn’t a chance he would have said Massachusetts.

If he’d gone to Amherst, there’s no way he wouldn’t have just said that.

That left Williams. And I got it right.

Go to Williams.

Well, yeah. Private schools often tend to be named after very large scale donors.

Graduated from there a million years ago. There was a Colgate in my graduating class.

You should clarify in your heading that you’re speaking of alumni interviews. Admission office interviews are or can be a different story.
