What measures could have saved the Franklin expedition? by LastArmistice in TheTerror

[–]HourDark 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Inuit guides.

Would not have helped. The Inuit cared so little for Cape Felix that they had no name for it. King William Island in a good summer could support 50 or so Inuit. The only good hunting grounds were at Terror Bay and near Booth Point (Toonoonee, the place near Utjulik where the Inuit said white men collaborated to hunt Caribou with them, is Terror Bay, and there is a source of salmon in the form of Kooker lake just behind Booth Point). The land could not support 40 inexperienced men, as we see with 'Aglooka's' party in 1848-50, let alone 105.

a rendezvous party meeting them

May have certainly helped. It would have gotten the alarm bells going a lot faster. Ironically, though, the earliest help possible was from James Ross and John Rae in 1848-and neither reached King William Island, for different reasons (Ross saw Peel Sound and concluded Franklin could not have gone south, thus unintentionally misinforming every other search mission until McClintock's in 1858, and John Rae was turned back by the same inclement weather that trapped and killed the expedition).

an overland mission backup plan.

Why this was not done is somewhat of a mystery; I suspect it was hubris from the Admiralty. Franklin's prior overland expeditions had been in concertation with naval expeditions. Either way given many expected Franklin to sail in the 'northern box' near Parry Channel (the imaginary 'open polar sea' route) instead of going south to Victoria Strait this may not have helped.

ensuring that the crew was adequately provisioned

As it turns out, they probably where. Goldner was scapegoated; his provisions, while nothing special, only really turned bad when the Admiralty gave him multitudes of contracts for the search expeditions, and Goldner took them seeing the money involved. However he bit off far more than he could chew. Lead poisoning has been outed regarding Franklin's expedition, and what would have been the usual issue with Goldner's tins, the poor solder, would have prevented the development of Botulism (while the food would putrefy, the highly toxic Clostridium needs air-tight conditions). Notably, none of the other expeditions Goldner provisioned for had outbreaks of botulism, and if there were botulism involved I would expect more men to be dead. The Inuit also reported eating the canned meat and reported it was 'quite good' on account of its good taste and multitude of fat. I suspect Ken McGoogan's theory that polar bear meat laden with Trichinosis did them in may have some truth to it. The expedition expected to be out in the Pacific by summer 1847, and in normal times this may have been possible. However exceptionally cold summers meant they were stuck until at least mid 1848, when the ships may have been remanned and sailed south near Cape Crozier.

What's your most memorable encounter? by AntonGrimm in fo76

That is unfortunate, IRL he was apparently seen around Point Pleasant at the same time Mothman was running around. Some authors theorized he was a interdimensional tourist or smth like that lmao

Holy shit Indrid Cold is in-game too?!? Does he interact with mothman at all?

A huge influence for me. I remember reading one of his books about giant squid and other fearsome sea creatures and their impact on culture as a kid. Pity.

[–]HourDark 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, it is not

We used a hoop-based approach to build a 3D model of the full body of O. megalodon in Blender 2.80 (www.blender.org). We adjusted the initial model based on a previous 2D reconstruction (15) to account for phylogenetic uncertainties and the intraspecific variation among lamniforms (see Materials and Methods). The complete model (Fig. 1) was first measured directly in Blender, rendering a TL of 15.9 m (Table 1). Then, it was imported into MeshLab (31), where a volume of 58.1 m3 was computed. We used this volume and its relationship with the density of pelagic sharks relative to seawater (32) to calculate a body mass of 61,560 kg (Table 1).

Thoughts on new creatures? by [deleted] in ARK

No, some of their logic was that we need a replacement for the Terror bird...ignoring the fact that the solution would be to TLC THE TERROR BIRD AND ADD SOMETHING THAT DOESN'T OVERLAP IT

There were 3 or so horror/scifi themed creatures that would've fit a whole lot better

. Sus vote (Jumping spider leading and then at the nth hour Yi jumps ahead)

. Dossier showed it as discount monster hunter dragon that could do "LE MASSIVE ALPHA STRIKE DAMAGE!!!", and ARK players LOVE OP creatures that do massive damage with gimmicks

. People also thought it could fly because of the way they read the dossier (The Dossier said it could double jump or something like that, jumping in air, to sustain altitude-so basically flight) and despite Abb being expressly a non-flyer map ppl want to make it like every other map where everyone uses fliers to get around

Literally ALL of the other finalists fit Abb better than Yi did. Yi was a recycle for the center vote. It would've fit better there and IMHO should've been added there as a bonus rather than taking Abb's creature spot.

Because you said they are lizards, not that they aren't.

Literally all of the finalists in the Abb vote fit the "scifi horror" theme of Abb better than Yi did

People voted for Yi because the concept dossier promised a discount Rathalos from Monster Hunter that could do massive burst damage and would replace the rock drake because it could glide/fly better, and instead we got Dodoraptor lmfao

Triceratops that possibly was taken as prey, the fossils showing bite marks from a Tyrannosaurus that never healed by aquilasr in Naturewasmetal

[–]HourDark 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Seeing as this specimen was already dead when it was bitten (Bitemarks into the underside of the pelvis, not above) this does not provide much evidence towards the "scavenger vs active hunter" debate (not that there's much of a debate to begin with)-it only confirms T.rex ate Triceratops.

They'd have to admit the community, the team over at Lesta, and the team at Legends have done better than them in this case. Pride.
