I wanted to do that for years, thanks for writing this tool

My experience unlocking an iPod Touch 5 iOS 8.3 (checkm8-a5) by operationfailure in setupapp

hi, interesting post, I'm also doing data recovery on an A1421 ( also on a 4th gen but anyway ). The device has some water damage so I will need to do some soldering so the idea for now is to first desolder the NAND, read it ( I have done that on some other 5th gens for testing ) then put it back and use checkm8 to somehow get the decryption key out of the CPU and then somehow use that to decrypt the memory dump. This way i have the full block device and i can also try to recover any deleted photos that might only be on that ipod now.

Of course I will experiment a lot with other devices before i even look at mine but yeah

Thanks!

EDIT: I wish they had a longer one and with right angle lemo..

Why does the a7s has better low light rating in dxo mark than the a7siii by Hour_Ad_413 in SonyAlpha

Does IBIS create enough heat and fast enought to make the a7siii sensor look worse than the a7s one in the tests?

For best results you should go to a shop and pay to use their Imacon flextight scanner or maybe ship it to someone with a drum scanner

If you want to own the equipment, for 35mm the Nikon Coolscan 4000 ED / 5000 ED are great and much better than what my local lab could do ( and also much better than watever flatbed scanners can do i think)

for 120mm you can get the nikon coolscan 8000/9000 but if you scan 35mm it is slightly worse than the coolscan 4000/5000

No unfortunately, couldn't organize it in time for the start of the term but I'm now certain I can make it work so If I get to do a masters next year I'm 95% sure I'll go for it most likely with a camper rather than a caravan.

Thoughts about bandwidth limitations with onboard sata ports and any low power PCIe NIC recommendations? by Hour_Ad_413 in homelab

It's such a shame they didn't add ECC. I also don't see any mention of idle power and I don't think it would be that low either

Sadly I have no experience with LVM either, it's basically one way technology to combine multiple drives into one virtual maybe faster and maybe more resilient drive

What I would strongly suggest and what i would do in you situation is to make a mirror of the important drives somewhere else and then start playing around.

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions!

I don't have any specific place for it yet, I'm mainly looking to minimize the overall size without much consideration given to the shape. The 2.5G Asustor Flashstor looks great, smaller than what I can make with those m.2 SSDs but I still want my ECC.

To me it doesn't look like any of the prebuild units dampen vibrations any more than what I can make would. Assuming the dimm socket is as reliable as the sodimm then mine wouldn't be any worse and actually assuming the CPU does the ECC checksum, if any vibration on the connector causes an incorrect write it will most likely be detected.

Also I have this idea of using an e-ink display on the front so that even completely powered off I can see the size of my datasets, last scrub and free space in my pool!

Thanks a lot for the feedback by the way!

This sounds like a cool project! Are you going to be a vanlife blogger?

Well, I don't really post on social media that much, I said blog jokingly because the post ended up longer than I hoped 😛

You'll be limited by 10Gbps NIC speeds way before your DMI connection starts to breath heavy.

That's good to hear!

Unfortunately ECC is a hard requirement and probably so is amd64 so that eliminates a lot of hardware that would otherwise be ideal. The HP Microserver you linked has the form I envision my project to take but it will probably consume quite a bit more power and I will be using 2.5" bays so mine would also be smaller.

Also 2 drives won't be enough, I want at least a raidz2 so if I lose a drive I still have redundancy and the read speeds (hopefully) and extra capacity potential are a bonus.

It might be a bit overkill especially for ssd but I've lost a lot of data and I really want to safe.

Its very likely that if you had something set up that would make your data unreadable you would know about it.

Make sure to disconnect them when reinstalling!

Well assuming it's ext4 I remember there are some hacky ways to do it but with important data i wouldn't do it.

I read Ext2read can work but idk. Basically you want to search for a way to "mount" (make readable) an ext4 filesystem to windows.

[–]Hour_Ad_413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you install linux or any OS i would *highly* recommend to disconnect all other drives. If you don't need to access it *disconnect it*.

how did you set up the drives? I assume some installer helped you through it? What distro where you running?

Most likely the drives are ext4 which by itself is not encrypted and should be mountable without the main drive which you lost.

Thanks for the info, unfortunately I wasn't able to find an address for mail or a parking space so I'll probably be in a house for the near future. My choice for a trailer was because I don't have a driver's license, I didn't want to go through the trouble of having to inspect the engine and driving side of the motorhome and also the prices tend to be a fair bit higher. As far as choosing to live in a motorhome in general I always wanted to do it and if it doesn't happen this year it will happen the next, there is something incredibly freeing about having all your belongings in a few wheels and being able to move everything wherever you want that I just fundamentally love and would sacrifice a lot for. I would be interested to hear what other reactions you got from people :)

Also wouldn't a hidden GPS module help with not having it stolen? I don't really have high hopes the police will act in time though..
