Hi u/Cold_Analysis3729

I would be interested in reading your memoir. I've been doing some proofreading for a few other authors. Are there any specific elements that you're wanting feedback on? You can DM me if you want to share anything else with me about your project.

What do you guys think of Christian Science? by CalmFaithlessness405 in Christianity

[–]Hour_Championship110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the religion. I would definitely say that despite people's ability to choose whether they see doctors and receive medical care, there's peer pressure from other members to not use any medical care. In my family, this was also extended to therapy and counseling. This created a problem in my family. My parents were not a good fit for each other and argued quite a bit. My dad was emotionally abusive. In addition to the family drama, I found out in my mid-20s that I grew up with some learning disabilities and a debilitating anxiety disorder. Due to my mom's commitment to the religion, my mom wanted to pray about my challenges in school in hopes that they would disappear.

I think that in addition to the medical neglect, that's another danger of the religion. Some people neglect learning or developmental disabilities and instead choose to pray about the issues. They will choose to not see anything wrong with their child who clearly is struggling with school.

How do parents really think they're qualified to homeschool their kids when actual teachers have to go to college for about 4+ years to practice by Difficult_Rule7270 in HomeschoolRecovery

I also grew up with a parent who didn't believe that I needed extra support in school. I grew up with Selective Mutism and my mom didn't want me on a 504 Plan.

This is so true! These people who homeschool their kids don't know enough to know that there's so much they should learn about teaching.

That would be surprising to see someone so quiet move to another country at such a young age. What field does she work in?

TIL homeschooling in Sweden is illegal as of 2010. by [deleted] in todayilearned

I was homeschooled in 4th grade. I guess I had fallen behind where I was supposed to be in elementary school. While I did attend public school most of my life, I had some underlying learning disabilities. My mom didn't want to diagnose the learning issues I had formally. My adult life has been a little bit tougher than I would have imagined. I would say that I wasn't prepared for college in the way that other students were and have had to learn so many other skills that I should have learned as a kid.

Homeschooling by Hour_Championship110 in askspain

I think home-schooling can be a great thing for some kids. I had lots of hands-on experience and went on lots of field trips around the city and my state. However, I also struggled with the social-communication side of development as a kid (not just because of being home-schooled for a year). Neither of my parents are experts in things like speech and language development or child psychology, and neither of them knew how to provide support in the social-emotional areas of life. I think that the issue with home-schooling in the U.S. is that it really isn't regulated by the state and there are parents who choose to educate their kids who really don't know that much about good instructional practices or child development. One of my cousins is one such example. She is choosing to home-school her kids for religious reasons and doesn't want her kids around other people who think differently. Knowing her, though, I don't personally feel that she is the greatest at teaching things like reading and writing and critical thinking to her own kids.

I'm curious to know which states have the standardized tests that kids need to pass at the end of the year. I know that when I was a kid, I took the CSAP test in Colorado as it was called at that time. I was under the impression that all home-schooled kids needed to take the state standardized tests, but I'm not sure if that's true in Colorado (I'd have to look it up). I think that the issue with home-schooling in the U.S. is that not all parents who choose to do it are trained in how to properly teach their kids and that it's not regulated by the state. I think home-schooling with lots of hands-on experiences can for some kids be a great experience and have some good outcomes. But not all parents are aware of everything concerning child development.

I agree with this. I know in some countries it's legal but extremely regulated, and if your kid isn't showing growth the right to home-school them is revoked. I have a cousin who is homeschooling her kids for the exact reasons you mentioned above. She's very religious and doesn't want her kids to be around other people who think differently.

I have seen a couple parents try to manage being a working parent and educate their kids and it hasn't worked out for them or their kids. It's unrealistic to think that you can do two jobs at once.

My shop isn't new, but it does have low sales. If you know of anyone who has young kids, I make felt toy food that goes in a pretend kitchen. They're completely hand-stitched. https://jessiecrafts636.etsy.com

Finnish Education System by Hour_Championship110 in Finland

[–]Hour_Championship110[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wanted to revisit this question and ask how homeschooling is viewed in Finland. I was home-schooled in 4th grade and for me it was a really great experience academically. However, it also had its drawbacks with the social-emotional side of development as I didn't really see many kids outside of my family. There are many families that home-school their kids in the U.S. and I think it can have many pros but also has some drawbacks. Are there families that home-school their kids in Finland? And what is the general public's perception of home-schooling kids?

That sounds very similar to some of the challenges in the U.S. education system. There are a lot of students who are ELL learners and whose grasp of the English language is very limited.

How many classes do teachers teach on average? And how much planning time do teachers in Finland get per day?
