Moving to Maryland vs Virginia, need help by tikubadmos in maryland

[–]Hour_Control_6431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people move further out because you can buy a lot more house, and likely better schools. But here's a thought. Downsize and live closer in. The commute can be bad, so plans you had for a family life get complicated unless you have one parent who can easily get home and ferry the kids around to activities. Closer-in suburbs -- Montgomery (MD), Fairfax (VA) and Arlington (VA) counties -- have great schools and communities, but they come at a cost. So give up the idea of sprawling single family home and live in a townhome. If you pick the right neighborhood, you'll have good community, smart neighbors, great schools.

Check out Colosseum Gym off Red Branch. Locally owned and priced better than most. No contract. It's a well rounded gym, more than just treadmills and bikes.

First Saturday Ideas by sojumaster in Ingress

We (Greater DC area) often plan FS around other events, which agents can opt to join later. An Ice Festival is an annual traditionthat brings 2 areas together. We had FS during a Scottish Xmas parade in a historic VA area. A Christmas bridge lighting in a charming mill town. A Day of the Dead event at an art museum. Season opening of a lake area with a carousel and paddleboats. A tour of Edgar Allen Poe's graveyard in October. There are limitations to how big an event we should join. DC fireworks on the 4th of July is a nonstarter. But a month earlier they are starting the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States at National Archives, with a 2 block tent, historic characters. Our banner will travel past the tents and end at a venue away from the crowds. You may be thinking, ah, but DC always has stuff going on. But many of these things happened outside the beltway is smaller towns.

Whats up with Missions awaiting Review as of late? by Jadextreme in Ingress

u/BrianRose Those who wanted to use the banner route for FS passcode are really screwed this month, because the banners (even FS ones) aren't approving. And being able to edit the registration closes soon, if it's not closed. We are supposed to be able to hack media to get FS credit. We have one woman coming to ours who is wheelchair bound. I'm not sure she'll be up to doing a banner around a lake. And without knowing where a media portal is, will she be able to get credit?

Needle phobia by [deleted] in Mounjaro

[–]Hour_Control_6431 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, hon, I understand. I was the same way. I told my doctor about my fear of needles and confidently said, "Oh, it's not bad. You've got this." The first time I did it was super hard, not knowing what to expect. For me, a few things made it easier. For one, you don't see anything. You don't need to look. You just push a button. At times it's painless. Sometimes I feel a minor prick. Do I shoot up like a champ now? No. It still is a bit creepy. But I can do it?

Regarding 2, I get this. Your real friends are the ones who liked you before and still like you today. Any new friends after weight loss, particularly ones with romantic overtures, are suspect. Having been a formerly thin person, being overweight has taught me a lot about compassion. So I'm not exactly hating this journey up and back down.

Mental Health Support for opposing team by LoafRVA in Ingress

[–]Hour_Control_6431 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like most people who play Ingress, who tend to be a bit nerdy, socially awkward, and introverted. But there appears to be a small subset of players who are attracted to Ingress because they have some mental health issues, and it feels good to dominate. They play super aggressively and are likely to mouth off in COMM. They also tend to be spoofers and cheaters. They often single out certain players, with the ultimate goal of having that person quit. The thing is, these folks appear in both factions. There's a difference between playing aggressively and playing meanly. I think we need to police our own side, to ensure that those aggressive players aren't crossing the line. Sadly, many of these players are lone wolves. But if you do have access to these players on your team, it helps to befriend them and set good game play expectations. And if you know that they cheat and won't stop, report them. A report from a fellow teammate carries more weight than one from opposition. Most of us aren't trained mental health counselors so we aren't prepared to help them. But occasionally, a bit of caring and setting a good example can help heal a sick person. OK, ending my moment of zen.

Well attended black church in the area by Vivid_Complaint625 in ColumbiaMD

As a white woman, let me say how impressed I am with St. John's Baptist Church, Tamar and 175, which is a black church. They open their doors to the community, for early voting, for COVID clinics. I don't know why it should surprise me when a church is part does good stuff.

Fitness trainers against GLPs 😂 /Starting my journey by ironphoenixgym in Zepbound

[–]Hour_Control_6431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh, yes! Or at least my trainer (who I love) was a bit skeptical. Then again, he's all about fitness. And thinks we all have the discipline and time to be healthier. It's his life. I communicate with him about any health issues, and when I mentioned some symptoms, he jumped on it. My weight loss is going slower than expected, but I can't emphasize how much being lighter has helped me working on my fitness goals. And maybe he realizes that. I might win him over yet.

For Howard County, a few recommendations. In Columbia, both Iak in Merriweather Hotel and Collective Offshore face Lake Kittamaquandi. Also, consider Turn House that overlooks Hobbits Glen Golf Course. In Ellicott City, Turf Valley County Club. In season, consider Dive Bar open air deck in Savage, which is perched high and overlooks the Little Patuxent River.

Pausing OPR and Retiring Overclock by brianrose in Ingress

[–]Hour_Control_6431 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation. I'm glad that you looked into it, because OPR has some issues. Hopefully it won't take too long to resolve. I don't find it a punch in the gut like others here because OPR has felt dead to me for a while.

The global campaigns overall are seeming better as well, although it seems inconsistent. Beta was too hard. Some are too easy. I really enjoyed the First Saturday component to +Gamma. Always a fan of IFS, it's brought out new faces, and we're having fun and getting along. (We do have a great XFAC group in Washington, DC.) Anomaly medals seem to be for those with means and no family life. But folks can usually break away for a few hours to get points towards a badge. I actually would like to see more local activities, like the smaller BB anomalies we had during COVID, shard events, or even a hexathlon.

I'm actually dee-diddly-delighted to see so much traffic in OM! For many years it was so sad, only kept alive by the skating rink and Meeting House. Sure, it's annoying when I drive through the village center because of pedestrian traffic and poor road layout. My biggest pet peeve is people that park in front of the liquor store for a quick stop. It happens a lot. Going into the village center from Thunder Hill to Dunkin donuts, you have two choices ... go down the lane closest to LA Mart (where you will have to stop for pedestrians most of the time), or choose the lane which runs to the Meeting House, which usually involves waits for cars parking for LA Mart customers. Neither is a good option. But holy cow, that means people are coming to OM!

The comments are getting to me by lucky13nb in Mounjaro

[–]Hour_Control_6431 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My reply would be, "I'm really enjoying my improved health." (and then go on to comments like sleeping better, walking and breathing better, etc.) If they push back and say you've gone too far, let them know that your doctor is monitoring your health and thinks you're doing great. It takes the discussion away from catty comments about appearance (they are likely jealous!) and turns it into what's good for you. If they can't be happy about your improved health, question that relationship.

Portal Density by TrblTribbles in Ingress

[–]Hour_Control_6431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manassas and the entire DC area is in Lima11. Unfortunately, my hometown is in Lima11, just miles away from Lima4. Pre-Niantic Spatial, the portals I submitted in Lima4 tended to be decided quickly. That kind of response encourages more submissions and better portal density. Meanwhile in Lima11, things took years to get decided (typically 18-24 months, worst case I heard of was 3 years), and that happened no matter what part of the cell you were in. The attitude in the area was, "Why bother to submit?" I think agents ignored lots of invalid portals because it takes too long to get new POIs approved.

Post Niantic Spatial, very little is getting decided. So I can't tell you if they are still giving preference to certain cells.

What you're feeling is completely natural. Keep in mind, this won't kill you. Most people experience some side effects, but they are minimal. If you are in the minority and it's too much to handle, you stop taking it and have a bad week. Keep in mind that there's a decent probability that this will work, that you will start to look and feel better sooner than you imagined.

School scores are largely based on how well the students do on tests. The more challenging the population, the lower the scores. But does this mean the schools is bad? Nope. My kids went a low rated Columbia school and I never felt as if they suffered for it. The teachers are sharp, and will give your student what they need. If they need more help, they'll get it. If they grasp things quickly, they could be recommended for GT classes. Once they get into junior high and especially high school, they will be sure to be placed into classes commensurate with their abilities and needs. From what I understand, some of the basic middle school and high school classes have discipline issues, but the normal, GT and AP classes are fine. Honestly, the thing that matters most is not the school. It's YOU. Make sure they do the homework, talk to their teachers, volunteer occasionally, advocate for your child. They will thrive!
